Another Retirement Visa Question
If you posses a "Multiple Entry" retirement non-immigrant o-a visa do you still have to get a re-entry permit from Thai Immigration prior to leaving Thailand to insure that your retirement visa will be valid when you return OR is the purpose of getting a "Multiple Entry" to relieve you of having to get that re-entry permit prior to leaving the country?

On the face of what you have written, then yes a "multiple entry" is just that, you do not need a re-entry permit.

Yes Ric, you (and Nereus) are correct about the multiple entry stamp. You can also get a single entry one cheaper (1900 baht I think) if you know you will only leave the country (and return) once.
I always get the multiple entry even though I've only used it once in 5 years because I feel that I want to be able to leave immediately in case of a health or family emergency and not be concerned with paperwork or losing my visa.

Some people mixed up the visas with the permission of stay stamps. The Visa is what the Thai consulate put in your passport when you applied for the visa OUTSIDE Thailand. The visa can be for a single entry or multiple entries and must be used latest the day before 'MUST ARRIVE BEFORE ... Date'. If you have a multiple entry visa you can leave and return how many times you like before that date and every time you arrive at the airport you will be granted one year's permission of stay, stamped in your passport by the immigration officer. If, however, your visa was for a single entry only, or the must arrive date has expired, then you will need to purchase a re-entry permit (single entry costs 1,000 baht and multiple 3,800 baht) at an immigration office (note! cannot be purchased at the airport) before leaving Thailand.
The re-entry permit will be valid for use until your previous permission to stay stamp expires, but you should preferably return no later than 30 days before that date in order to have time for the application of a permission to stay based on retirement should you wish to retain your status here.
