renewing UK passport

Post by moja »

Has anyone renewed their UK passport in BKK recently. If so how long did it take and did you go in person? How easy is the whole process?

I did it a number of years ago and it was pretty easy. Went in person as it's not a good idea to be without a passport here, although I think you can do it by post but The Embassy will usually advise against it.
If I remember correctly, there was a simple form to fill in, the fee and that was about it other than The Embassy taking photocopies of the details page. I could have got a 32 pager within a couple of days but decided to wait some two weeks for a 48 pager (that was only because The Embassy were waiting for the UK to send some over at the time). Got the original passport back and it was invalidated later when I picked the new one up.
Whoops, the situation seems to have changed:

Even easier by post. Did mine a few months back with no problems at all. Take a look at the Embassy website.

Agreed supposed to be very easy by post.

I did mine in Bangkok as was going there anyway. They also gave me a stamped photcopy of my passport details which I found comforting in the event of a need for the original. Posted back to me via EMS in less than two weeks but times vary according to how busy they are.

Thanks for the replies.

I have read the embassy site but just wondered if anyone had had any recent experience.

We have real problems with post here so would really worry about entrusting our passports to Thai mail. Even mail going to our PO Box goes missing!

Took mine recently to BKK just to make sure all the forms and photo was OK
Sent back by EMS 4 days later
no problems, staff helpful

I did it a few months ago, went myself as I don't trust the post. As said above all forms need to be correct and the photos need to be exactly what they want (there is a guideline on their website, print it off and take it to the photographic shop).

Easy as pie, friendly service and returned to me by EMS about two weeks later.

I went last week and was told processing time is 10 working days.
I downloaded the forms and took photos and docs with me. Be very careful sizing the photos. I had a photo taken and requested the size required. The resulting photos were the correct size but the head size was too small. I was renewing three passports so thought this was a problem a the others were in Hua Hin but was relieved a photo shop nearby was able to alter them in ten minutes.I was in the embassy at 8am and was 3rd in line. I was back in Hua Hin by 11.30. The passports I have requested to be sent to me and will wait and see ( promised post date 17th).

got our passport photos done in the UK last summer - so hopefully they will be correct :D :D I will however check the requirements to make sure.

Looks like we are going to have to trust thai post for the delivery of the new passports but perhaps we will have them sent to a friend in Cha'am who has no problem with her mail.
