Hi Buksi....can you tell me where the golf shop is in Cha-am? Is it in the same complex as that factory outlet that sells clothing?

Thanks

Yes, it's in the first big modern brick looking Factory Outlet you come to on the highway north of Cha-Am (Not the FN outlet). The golf shop is in a separate building on the left as you go into the driveway.

Played Kaeng Krachan today. Not much to add to previous reports except to say again that it was a great course. We wanted to play the new Nicklaus 9 first, but were advised not to as quite a few were teeing off there. So, we did the valley course first and by the time we got to the new 9 we were the only ones playing it!!
Both 9s were in great condition and had been heavily watered so everything was green. There aren't many water hazards to mention (at least on the courses we played), but all the fairways are tree lined so you can get into trouble there. I found the rough quite tough. It's not long, but it's thick and you need a good knock to get out of it alright.
Oh yes, bunkers, bunkers everywhere. If you don't like them, you're going to have a nightmare - take a bucket and spade!! I'd definitely play there again and do the lake course instead of the valley. the Nicklaus 9 would get another outing.
I managed a quite scrappy 92 - short game was useless - and I started out with a 9 on the opening par 5. Managed to pull myself together after that.

Went by taxi, so I didn't take much notice of the route. However, we entered and exited in different places.
On the way there, it was the main road to Tha Yang and turn left and eventually enter by the main entrance. The course seemed to be well signposted.
Coming back, we must have exited at the back entrance and followed some dirt track and badly potholed roads until we arrived at Tha Yang again.
So, I think we did both routes except we missed out the bypass and all that.
Confused? I know I still am

Thanks HH...I'll visit the shop next time I need something. Went to the one in Pran yesterday to have a look around and then ended up buying a putter :P

I was quite tempted to get a set of irons on display but the lady who works there advised me that they were copies rather than originals. Was quite shocked by her honesty but it certainly makes one feel better about buying stuff from her in the future.

Anyway, I've decided to buy my clubs individually as I can't afford to buy a good set and I'd rather not buy a cheap set and then have to change it later. At least if I buy them one or two at a time I can get some decent ones :thumb:

Watch out guys......there's a new Tiger in town

How long did it take to get there? Is it closer or further than Dolphin Bay?

Took a little under an hour from The Anantara - so from the north of town.
Further than Dolphin Bay, but not by a lot.

I would STRONGLY suggest not to buy them individually.
Clubs have characteristics. it is favourable to buy your iron set ( 9 to 3..4..5) as a set, so these react the same more or less to your swing

If you get a clubhead with less cavity and weighted sool compared to a more forgiving one, it will feel completely different. I'm not even talking about shafts.

Over her in Europe you can get used iron set for about 70 eur, guess in Thailand you can get one for about 4k.

its a different story for the wedges and utility, hybrids, woods and drivers.

There you can better shop around and get the one you like

Okay, point taken. I was hoping I could just buy one or two at a time, but all the same brand/design. If that's not possible then I'll have to go for a set. Perhaps from a 9 down to a 5 as I've been told you can do without the long irons by using hybrids instead?

All depending on your handicap
I play three wedges and irons 9 to 3, no hybdrids in my set
if you are a Higher handicap, (28+) forget everything past a five iron,

get some hybrids in stead of iron 3,4; you might even get a nine wood to offset the 5 iron ( sould be about the same distance)

reading your post I guess you are an high handicapper 36+ ?
I suggest a set of following (depending on you budget)
Putter: anything you feel comfortable with.
Wedges: Sandwedge, Pitching wedge.
Irons 9,8,7,6,5
Woods: 3,5,7,9
or:
Woods 3,5 and hybrids as offset for iron 4,5
makes 12 clubs. leaves two spots open

good luck !

Wanting a golf partner

Post by le pew »

Hi all. I have been an avid reader for some months now and after following some advice here I have booked my trip and accomodation for Saturday March 20th. Now, I understand that a trip to Bernies should be able to get me fixed up with a game somewhere but I'd also ask the question here in case someone is interested in a game from Sunday onwards. I'm only in town for 6 days but intend to play at least 3 rounds anywhere nearby. I am a bit of a hacker (22) so no fancy pants stuff from me but I love the social side of playing in LOS and having a good laugh about it all.

HHGS, home at Bernys plays every Tuesday and Friday, there is a role up at Lake View on Sundays - be there at 11am for a 11.30 tee off, just ask for Trevor - its a good group and nice format.
Hope you have fun!

I've heard that Kaeng Krachan are doing their sports day on a Tuesday as well as a Thursday.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case? I've got a telephone number for the course, but they never answer :banghead:
