Heading to HH - Advice Needed

Post by pharvey »

The countdown has begun..... I'm heading to Hua Hin on the 8th along with my wife, my sister-in-law and a dear friend to celebrate my 40th.

Accommodation is sorted - we have our own place (just, finished) up near the Black Mountain Golf Club, and despite some posts elsewhere on the site, I'd like to point out that we're happy with our place, and overall with the deal we had with the agent and developer. We can't afford the multi-million Baht places, but in all honesty we've got exactly what we want..... Great place with expat and Thai neighbors.

Anyway.... :offtopic:

The first couple of days are sorted...... 1st shopping for beer and munchies (probably also a few more sensible items as my wife will be with us).
Day 2 : My Birthday, so staying local. Drinking, eating, relaxing......

Now comes the problem...... what to do for the rest of the break? We really don't know the area: -

Not really having looked in detail, but having kind advice already from a few members of HHAD, there's a few things I/we would like to see/do: -

Floating Market - Damnoen Saduak, Ratchuburi (not for me, but a 5hr round trip for the rest of the gang)!

Phetchaburi - Certainly want to see the town, but the damn looks great.... or am I completely mistaken?

Sam Roi Yot - visited briefly last time... wonderful area and will do again.

Seafood - We love the restaurants in Cha Am, went to the wrong ones in Hua Hin? Have been advised to try Pak Nam Pran..... and will do. Will tie in with the visit to Makro and Tesco in Pranburi (where are they by the way....)!!

Personally, I like a drive through the countryside/seaside stopping off for a beer and a bite at a quiet place.... my mate will no doubt prefer the buildings, temples etc. (whilst enjoying a beer), my wife ...... the markets, Thai restaurants (don't we all), but not (really!) the shopping malls.

I don't intend renting a car until the second week..... Songkran, my 40th etc. etc. doesn't bode well for driving.... and I'm the only one that will drive. However, we do have a car and driver available during the first week if we need.... I think!

Anyway, apologies for the long, boring post.... just take pity on a poor Welshman and help if you can.

So guys & gals.... any suggestions (other than the obvious)?

The Fishing Lodge is a must, so forget that as a suggestion....!

As you're Welsh I'm not really sure what to suggest for your Saturday nights out, they just don't have your regular bus shelters to sit under, as we know them back home. Hopefully some of the other members can suggest a suitable alternatives??

I think Kendo's post pretty much sums the things to do as a tourist if " the fishing lodge is the best day out" I am sure the fishing lodge is great for people who like that sort of thing. I have happily lived here for several years and have often wondered how families who realistically have to be out of their hotel foom all day fill their time.

I'm sure you won't stick to any set plan once you're here anyway, so instead of worrying about it, just go with the flow and enjoy your time here. Happy 40th BTW :thumb:

Living here and visiting as a tourist are two very different things. I've done both and when you go anywhere as a tourist you have saved and budgeted for the trip (well, most people do) and money is no object. That being the case there is plenty to do:

Fishing
Boat trips
Water sports
Horseback riding
Shooting
ATVs
Paintball
Bowling
Go Carts
Golf
Sight Seeing
Day trips to national parks and historic sites
Restaurants galore of all types
Relaxing on the beach
Shopping at the Thai night markets
Clubs and Discos at night
A Thai festival, celebration or special event nearly every month
and much more...

The problem is once you settle here, unless you are rich, you can't afford most of these things any more as the prices are geared towards tourists...
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Hi pharvey

If you want to come to paknampran, you could try one of our eco-river cruises on an electric river boat to see the local wildlife/mangroves and enjoy a great lunch.
We'll even pick you up in Hua Hin and drive you back again.

We also do sea/fishing cruises on our big 2-decker and have a range of speedboats and kayaks for hire ....

Something else i enjoy is to get a baht bus up to Monkey mountain, feed the monkeys do some sight seeing visit the temple then walk down the steps to the beach, a few hundred yards is a couple of restaurants, eat neck a few beers then walk back to HH along the beach after this i feel brand new.

I want to do this walk very early in the Morning and walk the beach at dawn but i am not sure if it is safe to go up the mountain when its dark because the monkeys might attack and be aggressive.

Kendo

Why not do the trip in reverse?

You can then head-but the monkeys before you leave on the baht bus

Just a thought :duck:

Just a few comments

Petchaburi Dam

You must mean Kaeng Krachan Dam. - This really is a beautiful location and well worth a trip. There are many Thai resorts especially on the south bank which are worth a look and a stopover.
If your friends are in to temple spotting then there are worthwhile boat trips right across the dam to the head of the Petchaburi River on the far side. Just go to the main Dam head, turn left and follow the road until you come across the National Park office on the right hand side.

Seafood

Many - many places. Our favorite is 'Apple' - right on the bach alongside Anantasilla Hotel at Takiab. Good food, generous portions and great price. Used to be a very nice spot - until the banana boats moved in. But the seafood is great. Try their fried Cotton Fish (Pla Samlee) with som tam salad - best fish dish in town.

Tesco in Pranburi is on the LHS as heading South - you can't miss it
Makro on the LHS heading North on the bypass.

Fishing lodge? - Great place
Enjoy your birthday

Thanks for all the comments guys - appreciated, including those regarding the lack of bus shelters in HH!!

As a few have pointed out, not much chance of sticking to a schedule, and to be honest no intention of trying. I for one am into the relaxation and beer/cider consumption (purely medicinal) side of things - hence the fishing lodge at some stage. 8)

We'll all I'm sure enjoy a few days out, but nothing too energetic, whether it be sightseeing, taking a cruise or enjoying the great cuisine. I'm sure we'll all enjoy the break, getting a soaking and generally forgetting our working lives for a couple of weeks!

Anyway, thanks again and hope you all enjoy the Songkran festival however you decide to celebrate it (or not as the case may be)!
