G.B. Shaw hated the English language for its weird rules. He posed this example. How is GHOTI pronounced? According to him, it was pronounced: FISH. Can you figure out why?

Well the 'gh' is F - as in tough. the 'sh' is TI - as in expedition. As for the 'o' - pass!

Good try Mags.

I was going into a chippy last night and a guy came out and said "there's no F in cod. At least that's what it sounded like.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Truth is, it depends where you teach, how qualified you are and how much you want to work. Anything from 30,000 to over 100,000 in some places for people that have MA/PhD plus the Deltas etc. Some teachers probably even earn more than what Sarge's pension is  . I know fresh teachers working for agencies that get 30k a month basic but know a guy at Harrow international in BBK that gets about 75k a month, so it can vary wildly. If you are super well-qualified then you can easily command better salaries at the right places.

However, the average for most places is somewhere around 40k, give or take a bit, if you're not a baffoon with credible paperwork. There will of course be other figures being thrown around but location is important but I'd go for 35-40k as a general rule of thumb but more is possible in BBK and such places. Most places offer the chance of extra work though, so topping up your salary is often possible.

Margaret,

'o' as in women!
I've taught ghoti many times to show how nuts English is. I always tell students its not a 'pure' language but one cobbled together from many others and still doing it. It's a soup or a stew (they usually understand soup better then stew).
To illustrate I use the examples of
fish farming= aquaculture
electricity from water power = hydroelectricity
Aqua from the Roman and hydro from the Greek
And of course English is always borrowing, words like bungalow come to mind. And how about different words for the same thing?
UK - rubbish
USA - trash
Canada - garbage.

20K at the low end in crap ESL mills, 30-35K more the norm in ESL schools.
30K in government schools/colleges but accommodation sometimes included and ample opportunity to pick up 10K or more in privates.
80K+ in true international schools, up to 150K (friend made 130K in BKK).

Best jobs IMO would be in a gov't college. About 12-14 contact hours a week for your 29-30K. Privates to add 10K more and you still have plenty of free time. Outside BKK and resort areas you can live nicely on 40K.

Lis: You don't have to feel self conscious about posting anything. As long as it doesn't involve not being able to survive on less than 100,000 baht a month.

I'm not sure if JK is a teacher, but you don't have to feel sorry for us that are.

We get work permits, we're legal, and as long as we keep our jobs we don't have to leave the country every three months (we don't have to leave at all). We just have to pay the annual fee for a visa and work permit extension. We also don't have to bribe officials, or have 80,000 baht in our bank account. Both my husband and I can live quite comfortably on our salaries (see other thread about living costs).

I see from another thread that you are in your forties and are going to retire here. I'm looking forward to my retirement, but in the meantime I'm quite happy to earn a living here, and don't have to worry about border runs or boredom.

Good luck in your move.

VS,
I do feel sorry for people who get duped into working for 30K a month in expensive BKK with no materials, poor facilities and no WP. I had 30K +15K privates in Khon Kaen and lived well. You seem to have a good situation with proper work permits and with the two incomes you can have a pleasant life.
I'm not a teacher anymore. I did teach in France, Asia and Canada for 11 years after 20 years as a media relations guy and speechwriter. I have a high-quality Canadian TESOL (11 courses, 350 class hours + 40 hour teaching practicum). I have several close friends who did CELTA hence my comments on it.

Cheers

WELL DD... You've put an honest question to this forum in good faith, and quite honestly you've got
back the type of nit-picking answers I've come to expect on here now.
So,so many times someone comes on this site 'cap-in-hand' needing an honest, but fair answer, only to get shamed or ridiculed by the smart-arses on here.
My advice DD, if the replies here are no real help... then put the same question to the members on the
Thai forum 'TEAK DOOR'...the level of helpful answers will be far greater on that forum mate.
May I wish you well DD.
