Travel Insurance

Post by sarnie »

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone can help. We are due to come out to Hua Hin on friday but our insurance company will not cover us. Has anyone found a company willing to cover even if its just for medical.

Thanks

One who is supposedly giving quotes for travel insurance for Thailand is www.worldnomads.com

I checked both and both say "worldwide excluding Thailand"

So there seems to be no chance of a travel insurance.

Most insurance policies exclude cover if there is an official travel warning notice in operation, which there is for Thailand right now.

What about re-imbursement of costs already incurred eg airline tickets?

You could have an annual policy, for example, but when it comes to making a claim it will be refused if it relates to one of the countries on the list.
The airline is not going to reimburse you as they are still operating their scheduled flights and it's the passengers choice if they want to travel with or without travel insurance.
Some advise that if planning ahead to travel to a country on the blacklist then only pay a deposit on the airtickets until closer to departure date to limit your loss if you had to cancel.
There seems to be more chance of getting refunds if you're on a package holiday, rather than making your own bookings, as shown by the recent volcanic ash disruptions.
All seems a bit unfair if they refuse claims for lost baggage, or mundane medical claims, regardless of the circumstances.

Per-chance i had just been reading this on another Forum and it might assist....

Quote "My insurance is clear that it is void if travelling to areas against advice from FCO.

I found an insurance company called Wild Frontier Travel Insurance, I found it on a link from the FCO website.

They will add a premium for travel to such areas, the quote was for £75 for a single with a premium of £40 to travel to such areas, only available to residents of UK and Ireland."

Maybe this will help, but looks like there will be a premium to pay.

I've just read my policy document document from cover to cover twice. It is not clear in respect of:

I guess I'll have to phone them if the situation hasn't changed sufficiently by the time my trip gets close.

If you are travelling from the UK...DO NOT use 'Direct Travel Insurance'
they promise everything, take your money and in the event of a claim pay NOTHING.

Tough one. I guess Wild Frontiers is the best place to try. I know that pretty much every off the shelf policy is voided by the FCO warning. Kuoni and Thomson have cancelled all Thai package holidays until further notice, mostly because no-one will have insurance.

Let's hope it all quietens down after today's developments.

If you charge your airfare on a major card like AMEX, Visa, Master Card, don't they give you separate insurance inclusive of limited medical coverage and other losses? Pete

Here's part of the update from one of the larger travel agents :

...........Customers who have booked flight only with xxxxxxxxxx :

Customers due to travel to Thailand up to midnight 7th May can amend or cancel their booking in line with the relevant airline policy. Customers should call our customer service team on xxxxxxxfor more
details...........

Which would seem to mean that there's no special arrangements being made if the scheduled flight is operating.
Hopefully the travel advisory warnings will be removed quickly once the protestors disperse and the situation reverts to SNAFU

Have a search for RED 24/ACE insurance, they are still insuring trips to Thailand, or they certainly were last Friday.
