What is happening with the exchange rate ????
It has been the same at Bangkok Bank for the last week 67.11 to the uk £.

is someone manipulating the currency exchange rates ???

yes i saw it dip slightly under 67 this week the lowest i have personaly seen it for around 3 years
was getting 75 a few days before the tsunami thought the tragerday might have sent it higher but just the oppersit happened maybe the masive amount of donations helped this
i have no idea how exchange rates gain or lose but i am to;d it can often be linked to the dollor

Lowest 40 in 1989
Highest 87 in 1998 (when I bought the bar!!! Even moved to slightly over 90 a couple of days later). That was the big economic crash in SE Asia. The rate recovered to 60-65 fairly quickly and stayed there for years.

I was in HH last June and was getting about 3000 baht for $100 Aussie dollars.

Have just worked it out now and is about 100baht less at present. I worked it out that the UK rate and the Aussie rate is about the same at present, just over 2900baht for the $100.00 Aussise Dollar (42.2 english pounds)

For us that is still fantastic value when you consider the cost of food, drink and accomodation in Thailand, and will still be back again this year

So it is now 38.4 bhat to the US $. When I was there in Nov., it was about 41 bhat to the US $. Are all foreign currencies experiencing tthe same negative impacts, or is this just due to our internal economic mismanagement and Middle East misadventures ?

And what about cost of living in Thailand? I know gas/deisel is going up, but what about necessities such as beer!!

Beer is still great value at around a quid a bottle!! One or two items are a little more expensive, limes for instance are up because of a lack of rain apparently!

As the Baht is very strong for the moment, all currencies sufferer the same fate.

When I was in Thailand in 1992, the rate dropped to 32 Baht to the Pound. It was at the same time as the last military crackdown on democracy demonstrators.

I saw a posting a few days ago when somebody was suggesting he might move cash to Thailand to benefit from the current political unrest.

Until the Asian currency crisis the Baht was pegged to the Dollar that was the reason for the speculation and subsequent devaluation as the Baht was basically overvalued. Since the crisis the Baht has floated but still basically shadows the Dollar. The pound is now relatively weak against the Dollar because of the problems in the UK economy hence the Baht has strengthened against the pound.

I've seen the Baht go between 20 and 50 to the USD between 1970 and 1997. There was talk in the Bangkok Post some months ago that the Gov wanted it at or around 42 for export purposes and may even be willing to devalue to reach that target. I have no idea where that plan is now given what is going on with the USD itself and, with the political situation here. Pete

PS: At 20 life was still good, a Baht bus was just that, 1 Baht for the 12 km's I rode each morning. I think a small Singha was 10 Baht and a large 20. All night was 100...on and on...oh the memories....LOL.
