I had heard that due to the World steel shortage, eucalyptus trees are being grown to replace the chrome poles in a lot of clubs and bars in LOS.

A bugger when you get a splinter tho.

Since we're talking about trees, have a read of this: http://www.bangkokpost.com/life/family/ ... olden-teak

I'd like to get a sapling simply to see one growing and of course for someone else to see it full grown in 80 years. The soil requirements put me off but I then went to a market by Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip and wonder of wonders, they have golden teak saplings growing all around it. Soil there is same as mine; top soil, sand, clay then deep sand so I guess they can tolerate that. The hunt is now on for one to buy and plant. :D Pete

while we are on the subject of trees.... do Mango trees re-grow from a stump.

Im just wondering why the hell the two gardener mates that Mrs S hired to cut down the mango tree in the garden have done just that.... but have left a four foot tall stumpy bit.

Does it grow back, (ie is this a radical prune rather than a cutting down) .... or are they just being idle/thick? I know some trees grow back from stumps....the bugger never grew any actual mangos anyway....

Mrs S is her usual enigmatic self when asked....

Yes, the one in our garden was decapitated a couple of years ago - today it is bigger than it was before!

Back in 2002, our neighbour in Naebkehardt road had a large teak house (a mirror image of our house) taken down, as he did not want it.
I was doing a project and he offered me the original front stairs which were 3 inch thick and made from golden teak, albeit around a hundred years old and very grey in colour.

I had them sent to the sawmill opposite the palace to be planed up and sawn to a size I could use.

When they came back, the colour of the wood was an incredible bright gold. The only problem was the awful smell, which the builder assured me would fade in a few weeks.

They now form the floor in the Buddha room at the farm in Nakhon Sawan.

Beautiful wood but costs a fortune in the UK.

SM I think what your gardeners did was a form of pollarding and you will have a huge tree in a few years but still no fruit.
