Tsunami Stupidity

Post by sandman67 »

A few days ago I read, with my usual depression at human stupidity, about one of the shonky Thai fortune tellers in Samui spreading some rumour about an impending Tsunami, and that set all sorts of chaos in motion including a full on siren alert in Samui. How I chortled at the local authorities being made to look like prats......

Id usually file this into the mind bin had I not spent the last two nights listening to the bar girls chattering about it. Seems some are scared because the bars are so close to the seafront..... I laughed, then just shrugged it off as a poor education and a shame.....

Then the cherry on the cake.... now Mrs S is thinking twice about a house purchase as its near the beach and she doesnt want to get washed away by the supposed Tsunami (ignoring of course the fact that Thai fortune tellers are all a pack of lying snake oil salesmen).

Ive even tried sitting her down with Googy Earth and showing her the local plate tectonics and trying to explain that a tsunami sweeping up the gulf would be rare as rocking horse do do and improbable as Thaksin telling the truth. No hope..... no matter how carefully and simply I explain the science she still thinks the snake oil salesmen have the authority. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

so....

1) Has a tsunami ever hit this coast (even waaaaaay back when)...they do leave traces behind in the geological record.

2) Doesnt anyone in authority here ever take on these dimwit chicken gut fondlers and publicly rake them over the coals for spreading false information and scaring the cack out o people?

:banghead:  :banghead:

Sandman

I got the same crap from Mrs. T early in May - I think it was the same ruse. :guns:

It's one of the joys of being married to a Thai. :banghead: :banghead:

If the local monk or the snake oil salesman says it - it MUST be true.

Plate tectonics, common sense, application of science - nope - doesn't have the same mumbo jumbo factor :tsk:

Don't ya just love em

It's funny isn't it? To hell with Internet searches and facts on geology/geography, let's listen to the feeble fortune teller mystic in a shack by the beach that does hand readings for gullible tourists. :rasta:

You couldn't make stuff up as good as this SM. You'll just have chip away dude. They've just watched to much TV man.

The funny thing is that there actually was a 7.6 quake on the Andaman side yesterday near the Nicobar Islands. Somebody somewhere must have known something.

bunch of cynics.
Don't ask me for help when your lounge becomes an indoor swimming pool and sleeping on the roof (if you still have one) is a great place.
Because it's dry.
See the thing with predictions is if you do enough, Just one day one will come true.
As an old soothsayer myself I have rattled my bones, (a lot easier nowadays) and sacrificed a mossy to mossy heaven and i predict England will win the world cup.

Deer Soothsayer,
I've had this problem with my English spouse since 1970. Every time the spouse tells me that we will be able to sell our property near Wembley for a very good profit once England have been crowned the European or World Champs. I've wanted to move to Thailand since 1967 but haven't been able to do so because of this. Every two years the predictions are very high and afterwards it's always the same story: "The manager wasn't up to it" or "The manager was a foreigner so he couldn't get the best out of our boys but we'll do it next time as we have the best players."

Now what would you advise me to do?

Sign me: Still shivering in the rain

Sorry my dear English friends, just couldn't help meself this time.

BG.
For you i have sacrificed my first born albatross. Burnt the ashes and smoked them.
I have asked the spirit king Singha for advice. Which did take several hours.
Even Singha was perplexed.
The gods say.
1 day England will win the world cup.
But maybe your bones will be very old.
So considering the economies of the UK.
Jump ship now and enjoy yourself.
Go to the LOS and enjoy yourself.
Convince she who must be obeyed that you are right.
And a genuine soothsayer has told you so.
Is that the door? :run: :D
