Andy Ripley RIP

Post by caller »

One of the greats sadly died today after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was awesome whether playing for Rosslyn Park, England or the Lions.

I grew up a few hundred yards from Rosslyn Park, whom he played for, when the Park, pre-professionalism were a great team. I used to go fairly regularly, alternating with Chelsea games and I well remember him, he was such an imposing figure.

A few years later, we used to drink in the club after playing footy for our pub team, which was on the corner of Barnes Common, opposite the ground. It was kind of illegal, pre-all day pub opening but extra coffers to the club and Jeez, could those guys drink!

Thanks for the great memories.

Yes, very sad news - another great passes.

Saw him several times in 7's and playing at the Rec against Bath - without fail would mix with the supporters in the clubhouse after the game. A real down to earth guy whom I was privileged to meet.

He was a scary prospect for any defender, international standard 400 metre runner with a knee lift designed to deter any tackler.
