Buks, if you are looking at buying only Buy Now items, look out for ones that have best offer as well on the sale item.
Even though it will be up for sale at the sale price, you have an option to make and offer at a price you select.
It is done two ways. Either the seller will have a minimum accept offer where he will not take bids under a certain amount or there will be no pre set limit where the seller will review and consider all offers.
Be aware that if you make and offer and the seller accepts it, the sale is done there and then. So just be sure that you actually want to buy the item before you make an offer.
I have some items up on sale at present and have trailed this form of selling and have got some sales that perhaps I would not have got sticking to the normal format.

This seems to be the right thread ...

Has anyone successfully bought expensive items on eBay from Hong Kong and had them shipped to Thailand without any problems?

I'm in the market for a new DSLR and you can save up to 30% by purchasing in HK as opposed to Thailand - just worried about shipping such an expensive item and the customs thieves ... sorry, 'officers', getting their mitts on it and demanding 700% import duty.

Hey just a few pointers as up until a month ago I used EBay quite a lot as a buyer and seller when I was in the UK...

Anyone who is thinking of becoming a seller should maybe consider drop shipping. No need to buy stock, simply act as the 'middle man'. Less hassle with post and packaging as this is all done for you plus if you're worried about items not reaching their destination from Thailand then simply choose a drop shipping company outside of Thailand. Make sure your listing ends at peak times e.g. between 6pm and 8pm UK time as most people are likely to be online and ready to make their bids. Selling items from Thailand is risky if the items are valuable. Try to keep items small and well packaged. Alternatively if you know someone who lives in the UK and is willing to act as your middle man then why not send in bulk to him/her and let them deal with the post and packaging?

If you're a buyer in Thailand then keep your UK Ebay account and get items sent to a friend/family member if the seller won't post here. This depends on how desperately you want or need the item as you'll have to pay extra P&P fees. Anything that is produced and can be readily bought in Thailand such as clothing will have import taxes stamped on it.... to avoid this simply have the sender mark the package with SAMPLE. This should help you avoid any hefty tax.

And as far as I'm aware there is no Ebay Thailand.... although I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong :)

Hope this helped?

PM if you need more info :)

Sorry to hijack the thread (I don't have any experience with Ebay in Thailand or HK), but was wondering what dSLR you are looking at? I am also interested in getting one and was going to wait until I came to Thailand. Might try to look here or in the US first now...

mabubba, a new camera thread has been started here: http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/vi ... 15&t=16784

Thanks to the rest for your input ... I'll forget about eBay and HK then, shame because I could have saved about 15k for an identical camera over there as opposed to buying here.

This is frequent with PayPal and the major credit cards where billing address and delivery address are different. Particularly where Thailand is one of the addresses. Have found that that sending a copy of the refusal to their contact address with brief details of the problem with often achieve the desired affect.

I find Paypal to be a royal Pain in the A**, to do business with in general.

And from Thailand forget about it. It can take all day to do the online bs with them.

I have a U.S. PayPal account, but I found that over here I had to open a completely different Asian PayPal account to not have problems. Even then, it's only good for ordering things from other Asian countries like Singapore.

Posted this in the other camera thread some time back:-

"I've bought 100+ items over the past 2 years ranging from $100 filters to $4,000 film scanners. Not one item "lost" or damaged.

The tax (when charged i.e. about 25% of the time) is insignificant compared to the price saving.

Lots of items I buy are not available in Thailand hence eBay is a Godsend for me"

Use PayPal from my Thai bank account without any hitch and takes merely minutes to conclude. The one and only time I had a problem PayPal where exemplary.

Bought items from every country imaginable without problems

"lilmolfie" is spot on.

Ebay is available in Thailand.

p.s. Ebay is no longer the place for bargains. In fact many items are way over priced due to naive bidders. Great if you're a seller tho!

This reply is a little late, but Buksi, you can buy from Hong Kong without any worries. I have done so many times and never once had a problem, and neither have I even been charged any import tax.

As far as PayPal is concerned.......been using them for years and only had a problem once while in the UK. As soon as PayPal became available in Thailand, I opened a Thailand PayPal account linked to my Thai bank account, and have never experienced any problems - I've bought stuff from many different countries outside of Asia, and always a smooth transaction.

Sorry to drag this thread up again but I'm considering buying a golf club off ebay. I've never bought anything on it before.
The price is excellent and there's no bidding. The club would come from the USA. I've checked that they'll ship to Thailand and the extra cost. Have also looked at setting a Paypal account up and that looks simple.
However, I've got a couple of questions.
Firstly, do experienced buyers on the forum think I'll I have a problem with customs? Looking at previous posts that seems unlikely.
My other question concerns Paypal. I'll give my address here, or maybe even the Post Office as I have a box number there - I know the club won't fit in it but I think they'll notify me when it arrives and I'll go and collect. However, my bank statements go to the UK and that is my given address for banking purposes. Will this cause a problem when I come to pay as the club isn't going to the UK?
Thanks for any advice.

Can't really advise on delivery to Thailand, but I've not had problems having items delivered to China. I certainly wouldn't be overly concerned about having a golf club delivered provided it is packed well - the handling here is not the best, and similar to Thailand at a guess. Also provide a contact number (obviously Thai speaker better).

With regards to Paypal, use the address you have in the UK registered with your bank account. The delivery address/registered address with eBay can be easily changed as required.

[EDIT] There's no problem in having a different overseas delivery address to that of your UK address, providing of course that the seller is willing to deliver to Thailand.

Over the last 2 years I've bought and sold a range of goods off E-Bay - from golf equipment and guitars to electrical equipment and silver bullion. Some were bought at auction and some on a 'buy it now' principle. Before I describe my own rules for bidding/purchasing, let me say that I have never had any items delivered to my home in Thailand as I, like many, do not understand the vagaries of the import/export system. Instead, I have them delivered to the UK where I collect them on my biannual trips back and then re-sell. I have a couple of simple rules which I stick to before I buy or sell which may help any newcomer to E-Bay:

I don't buy from any seller with a rating of less than 95% (this is the positive feedback response from purchasers of his/her products and is clearly displayed).

I don't buy any product which displays a generic photo of the product (ie one cut and pasted) rather than actual photographs of the product being sold. (This is particulary important when buying second hand items).

If I'm in any doubt regarding the authenticity of a product, I'll ask the owner for more information regarding where bought/receipts/serial number etc. (An inbuilt question box allows you to do this quite easily). Remember that E-Bay is probably the most used site for the sale of 'copied goods'.

I always pay and receive payment through Paypal. Their charges are a little high but worth it in my opinion for security and safety reasons.

I make payments without delay and ensure that I post items promptly. At the conclusion of our transaction E-Bay asks the other party to rate me as a seller/purchaser and it's important that I maintain my 100% positive feedback record.

I go out of my way to describe the goods I'm selling as accurately as possible, sometimes going a little overboard on the faults. When selling, I use the option which allows me to download multiple pictures into my advert. Whilst this option costs a few pence more, I have found that prospective purchasers are far more confident in bidding when they see that the seller is going out of his way to show that he/she has nothing to hide. When buying, I expect a genuine seller to adopt the same principle.

When buying, be aware that a fair number of non-business sellers to not want the hassle of posting large items. Make sure that they will post to your home country and confirm the cost with them before entering a bid.

When bidding on an auction, I use an electronic bidding system to bid on my behalf 10 seconds before the auction ends. I won't mention the name of the company, as I don't want anyone to think I'm advertising. Let me just say that the results are very impressive.

In conclusion, your first occasion using E-Bay, (especially an auction), can be a little daunting. Just be a bit careful and I'm sure you'll have as much pleasure out of the experience as I have. But beware that it can become a bit addictive.
