I was in an open sea-food restaurant in Cha Am last year when something long, thin and green like that came down from a tree outside.
I wasn't too happy, but the Thais in the place didn't seem bothered by it.

You can also Google 'Thailand green whip snake'. I've seen plenty of them before, very thin body and pointed head. Indicates they're mildly venomous but they have to chew on you for awhile. Pete

Further....it could be a 'green vine snake' rather than green whip snake. :? Pete

Thank you for the many hints. I think the green vine snake comes nearest because of the very thin body and the green colour.

I've been looking for houses to rent and I have to say I'm totally freaked out by the idea of renting one and then having snakes show up all the time. I have two of the most stupid dogs in the planet. They'll get bit for sure. Are there areas more likely to have snakes? I saw a house on Avenue 88 today, inside a complex near a university (sorry, can't remember names). The houses are right against the hills. No construction going on, but lots of grass and open spaces. Anybody lives in the area and can tell me whether snakes are common around there?

I live in that area and I hate to sound negative but yes, we have enough snakes in our area to feed the whole Burmese and Isaan guest-worker population in Hua Hin.
Just remember that most of the snakes are harmless and most dogs will instinctively keep a distance to the snake, but, (no guarantee of course).

One of my dogs is a spaniel and instinctively chases anything that moves. The other is still a puppy, so he’s just plain dumb. If I have to rely on them to protect themselves, they’re doomed.

Are there areas where I'm less likely to run into snakes? I don't want to rent a house in town (I have yet to see one that has grass). I was hoping for a nice place a couple of kilometers outside the center, where it's quieter and yards are bigger.

Yes, outside southeast Asia!

Well, I've lived in both Vietnam and Cambodia and never ran into a single snake. As for Hua Hin, I was hoping that maybe the farther away you get from the hills, the fewer the chances of running into a snake. Or something like that.

Certainly you don't seem to get them very much around the area near to Petchakasem road.
We stay near to Hua Hin hospital and I've never seen a snake around our house when I've been there.
If you really don't want to have a problem I would look for somewhere a bit busier where they're going to get scared away by the general coming and going.
To be honest, the only place I've come across many snakes is out on farm land in the countryside, although I been led to understand that they like golf courses as well!

A snake came into Mr. Burger on the Klong Road one night a couple of years ago, and that`s right next to the Railway Line.
He evidently didn't have a reservation, as the boss threw him out!

I have had only one in 4 years in Soi 6, and that is towards the hills, but then I am not there all the time. They do need water, so in the dry season they are inclined to wander around a bit more. Not sure that the hills have much to do with it, except that there is more natural vegetation still there, and less noise to disturb them. And I believe that different species like different habitats, so that may have some bearing on where they hang out, along with the available food source.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

So why exactly would they come into your yard? If there are open spaces around your house, wouldn't it make more sense to look for food there? And does having a pool make the attraction stronger?
