Hi
My sons girlfriend has just given birth.
Can anybody advise how we go about getting the baby registered as a British Citizen, is it difficult and what documentaion is required?
Thanks

Re: Birth Registration
Get the birth certificate, get it translated and goto the embassy. Check out the online website also

Re: Birth Registration
It is advisable to get all of the Thai stuff done first, the birth cert should come from the hospital, then you need the Thai passport (which is relatively easy).
Once that is all done its time to do your notorised translations (birth cert, marriage cert) and apply via the British embassy.

Re: Birth Registration
Hi SPAM,
I registered my son's birth last year with the british embassy in Bangkok and obtained a british passport at the same time. It was easy to do if you have the correct documentation:
Application form (can be downloaded from the british embassy website)
Child's birth certificate
Your son's birthday certificate (for right of citizenship for the child)
Your son's passport
Mother's passport
Marriage certificate (not applicable in your son's case)
Any documents in Thai should be translated into english.
You will need photocopies of all the documentation. If you apply in person, the embassy will certify the copies and return the originals straight away.
Visit the british embassy website, all the information is there, or give them a call. Procedures
change so best to check their website.
It took about 3/4 weeks to process, and you have the option to collect the birth certificate, or have it sent via EMS.

Re: Birth Registration
The birth certificate from your son must show his parents ( long version)
I think also being unmarried the childs Thai birth certificate must show your son as the father.
As the previus poster wrote a British passport can be obtained at the same time. This will only be of use if the child will require it to travel within the next five years.

Re: Birth Registration
Do I need to be married to my Thai partner before I can apply for a British passport for our son?
Re: Birth Registration
No, but it certainly helps - there will be a hundred extra hoops to jump through if unmarried including a UK habitual residency test.

Re: Birth Registration
Thought that test was only introduced for migrants who want to claim benefits?
Re: Birth Registration
I had to do it as our eldest was born a month before we went to the amphur to register our marriage. Things may have eased up now though, this was 10 years ago.

Re: Birth Registration
I dont know how difficult it was to obtain (as far as I'm aware not very difficult), but my brother-in-law was living in Thailand and unmarried to his Thai partner but was able to get a British passport for their daughter born in HH some eight years ago.

Thanks, I'll let you know how I get on!
