Nursing homes

Post by lindosfan1 »

We have a relative who suffers from senile dementia. One of the options would be a nursing home. Are there any good ones in Thailand or is it a no go area with bad treatment.
Any body have any experience of this?
Thank you

Finding a good nursing home where the staff are qualified in treating EMI (Elderly Mentally Infirm as Senile Dementia is now referred to in UK) will be difficult in Thailand as it's more usual for someone in their extended family to take on the responsibilty and become the carer.
Try asking at one of the big Bangkok hospitals for recommendations.

Here's a positive article about the subject. Having said that, I can't find much reference to any individual private facilities. Perhaps there are many but they don't seem to advertise or introduce themselves through on-line articles or web sites. Pete

Pete, what are you doing up at this hour???

I googled Baan Kamlangchay since I was interested and found much of the same article repeated.

Also many sites in German and other languages that perhaps add more, but beyond my linguistic capabilities!!

As mentioned, many just take care of the elderly through relatives, nursing homes are not something I've come across or really heard about in the time I've spent here, there may be some in BBK but I'm guessing they would be very expensive.

The other scenario I've come across though is the hiring of a private nurse that does the 'live in' thing wherever the family have the elderly person in question residing.

Thanks for the replies, I to found a couple of possible sites, but the language baffled me. We will inquire at one of the big hospitals good idea that. Live in nurse is a possibility, the worry is can you trust them.
Another question is we may need a peron/bank to manage the finances any ideas on that.
Thanks for the help so far

Just guessing but perhaps a standard POA (Power of Attorney) signed paper could be given to a bank manager, bookeeper or accountant to do the transactions or someone trusted could use internet banking maybe ?

Lindosfan,

Thankfully, I've no experience of this, but browsing the BangSaphan sister Forum this evening http://www.bangsaphanguide.com/ I came across this post:
รับสมัครนางพยาบาลดูแลผู้สูงอายุ

รับสมัครนางพยาบาลดูแลผู้สูงอายุ อยู่ประจำ มีประสบการณ์ หรือเป็นพยาบาลเกษียณอายุแล้วก็ได้นะครับ มีที่พักให้ อาหาร 3 มื้อ ทำงานแถวบ้านกรูด ประจวบ ใกล้ๆบางสะพาน ติดต่อ วัตร์ 081-839-7811
which Google translates as:
Apply elderly care nurse.

Apply elderly care nurse is a nurse regularly experienced or retired, is also available to go to accommodation for 3 meals a row working Ban Krut Bang Saphan Prachuap near Watson's contact 081-839-7811
I thought I'd let you know - obviously I've no idea of how good or bad they are, but it might be worth your wife giving them a call.

When they said they would also go to the house, I was thinking something may have been lost in translation ie would also go to the house as well as what? I just thought it might be worth your wife phoning. If they don't do the service required, they are obviously in that business and might be able to advise - it won't cost much just to enquire.

This is not an answer to that question but an associated thought. Therere are at least 2 developers in HH who are building accomodation for people with dissabilities who previosly thought that they could not travel. Acconm with nurses on duty and relationships with ambulance services and our hospital.
We will be able to perform renal dualisis and patients who need this will now be confidant that they can get this care in HH.

Yes, I've also not seen or heard of nursing homes in Thailand, so I think you may have to think about hiring a nurse. Shouldn't be too difficult if the pay is right. Also, depending on how severe the condition is, you may not require a qualified nurse, but instead, just someone to act as a carer.

In my opinion, it's probably a better option anyway, because let's face it, nursing homes aren't exactly the most pleasant of places. I sure hope I never end up in one, although I do realize they are sometimes needed. Is the person in question a Thai or farang?

I have lots of experience working with dimentia and alzeimer patients from the U.S. I have my diploma from MSTB PHiladelphia trained to take do elderly care. It is very hard to find a facility that takes acre of patients that suffer from this. For those whom do not have this kind of experience they do not understand that it is very hard for the family themselves to care their loved ones with this due to the patients do not remember them, it hurts emotionally eventhou we know the patient cannot help it. This is a case where caretakers like me come in. If you are interested to talk more I would be more than glad to hear from you. Please email me at jgamble283@gmail.com

Have a great day...
