His average net spend was 16 million per season, it's not a huge amount of money if he was expected to win the league and bar last season we were a bloody good side.

Stoke have just spent more than that and they haven't earnt money from good runs in the Champions league over the years, one of the biggest merchandise incomes in world football, the biggest sponsorship deal in world football etc.

The fact is that we haven't had a transfer kitty for 3 years, it's been sell to buy, we're currently treading water to pay the £100'000 a day (£36.4 million a year) interest rates of the owners, not investing to try and win something.

Benitez' spending gets distorted beyond belief, his only losses were Keane and Pennant (who he only bought because they wouldn't put up the extra few million for David Silva)

I actually really liked the look of Aquilani towards the end of last season and he may have come good if Benitez had stayed.

So, against United our whole starting 11 cost £64 million, about the same as Rooney and Berbatov, and Liverpool are expected to challenge for the league.

I'm actually more concerned with what's going on in the boardroom than on the pitch at the moment which is a sad state affairs. Thanks for that H&G. :guns:

I read that Agger is rebelling against Hodgsons long-ball tactics and says he will not play that way, in that case I guess he just won`t play.

I read what he'd said on a Danish TV programme, that he likes to play it on the ground and won't change his game completely, the papers decided to alter it to "Furious" Agger "slams" Hodgson.

I agree with Agger, He's our best centreback and should be playing.

I can't be arsed replying to you Manny.

Daniel Agger today hit back at suggestions he has criticised the Reds' style of play under manager Roy Hodgson and insisted: "I'm happy at Liverpool."

The Reds' defender spoke to Danish TV following Sunday's defeat to Manchester United, after which quotes attributed to him emerged in the Danish press which seemed to indicate he was unhappy with the role he was being asked to play in the Liverpool team.

Agger was keen to set the record straight when he sat down with Liverpoolfc.tv at Melwood today.

"I am very disappointed with the papers in Denmark for the way they have done this story," he said. "I spoke to Danish TV after the game on Sunday and answered the questions that were put to me. I didn't speak to the papers.

"The problem was the questions never appeared on TV, only the answers did, and then the newspapers put their own questions in. What came out was one hundred per cent wrong and that is why I am very disappointed.

"An example is the quote about me not playing long balls. The TV journalist asked me what I needed to do to get back into the team and suggested I should start hitting more long balls. I said I wouldn't do that because I'm not that kind of player. That's where that quote came from.

"I actually think we play good football and that we have showed that against Manchester United and against Arsenal.

"What I don't understand is that it was only a few days ago when I spoke to the media ahead of the Steaua Bucharest game and I think I said everybody at the club was happier now with the new manager, the new players and the new methods. It's strange to read this just a few days later but that's the way the media works, especially in Denmark. They don't have much to write about so they look for every little thing and try to make a big sensation out of it.

"I have been involved in every game this season. Of course I'm disappointed when I'm not in the team, but I have been here for five years and really like it here. I wouldn't have stayed for this long if I didn't like it or if I was unhappy. I am still happy and will keep fighting for my place."

BaaBaa, what the guy has said speaks volumes! Hodgson also made the point that the squad he inherited was bloated beyond belief and there haven't been too many dissenters with the changes Hodgson has had to make based on Benitez's failings.

I do think some of your loyalty/respect to Benitez, whilst admirable, is misplaced.

So they got rid of him as he's clearly past his prime, makes sense to me. I actually work with scouse fans, one who regularly travels to scouseland to watch games, who sure don't see things with the same rose tinted glasses you do!

They might not be thrilled about Hodgson, but they are glad to see the back of he who walks on water!

Did they want him out approximately one year earlier on their jaunts to Anfield? Fairweather fans.

Benitez was the least of Liverpools problems and called out the shithouses that were and still are.

You really are too sensitive about all of this. Someone that travels regularly from London to watch games and has gone abroad with the team is hardly a fairweather fan! Yeah, sure they have issues with the ownership, but they weren't immune to Benitez's faults either.

I guess we'll all just have to wait to season's end to pass judgement.
