Chick or Split Peas
Chick or Split Peas
Anybody know where these are available in Hua Hin
I want them to make an Indian dish known as Chana Masala.
I came across something called Mung Bean but they were much too small, even after soaking for hours in water.

Re: Chick or Split Peas
I've seen tinned chick peas at Tesco Lotus and also dried chick peas..... somewhere else!!
Not seen split peas, but for that matter have never actually looked. Mung bean are totally different - several recipes call for them but generally used in a ''Dal''. Have you been able to pick up Indian spices in HH?
Be interested in your recipe for Chana Masala though

Thanks I shall look in Tesco, I have had them in UK from there but must have missed them in Hua Hin.
Re spices I have found that Makro have a large and very good selection with Villa Market OK for some also.

If you don't find them in the big supermarkets, you could try the "Chinese" shop on Chomsin between Petchkasem and Nebkahards. They have had a reasonable selection of pulses before.
However, I've never seen channa dal here and I have looked for it.
Channa dal is regarded as having the "meatiest" taste of any dal, but there will surely be substitutes.
I've often used the moong beans when black eyed ones are called for. The size of the moong beans would be closer to what you'll probably need for a channa dal dish anyway.
They're dead easy to cook and don't need much soaking before.
Good luck and post your recipe!!

I've seen chic peas in a can here too at many of the supermarkets. They are also called garbanzo beans in many parts of the world so the can may say that...
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

SORRY I forgot the recipe.
2 x 400g cans chick peas ( drain water or brine)
1.5 litres water
2 tablespoons oil
1/2 medum onion finely chopped
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoon garam masala ( recipe follows)
1 teaspoon grated fresh root ginger
2 red chillies chopped ( more or less to taste )
200g canned tomatoes
Salt
For Garam Masala :-
2 tablespoon coriander seeds
1 tablespoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon black peppercorns
1 teaspoon cardamon seeds
5cm cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon cloves
1/2 nutmeg freshly grated
Grind all the spices to a fine powder ( I roast first on a medium heat for a few mins )and put in an air tight jar and store in a cook dark place - mine goes in the fridge.
RECIPE
Heat the oil over a low heat and add the onion and cook until golden brown. Add the coriander, cumin, turmeric and garam masala and fry for 1 min. Now add the ginger, chillies, tomatoes and some salt to taste and stir until well mixed. Lastly add the water and chick peas and bring to the boil, then lower and simmer uncovered for 5 mins. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
ENJOY

Can't you get dried chick peas at the shops behind ChatChai market along SraSong Rd? There's sacks of all sorts of stuff - also maybe the 'spice lady' in the shophouse next to Subhamitra Hotel. She also sells a few spices.

Villa for sure and I think I picked some up in Delize. Use them for houmous. Try draining them and putting in a blender with a teaspoon of fresh chilli paste, a good glug of olive oil and a bit of lemon juice. Olive oil can be replaced with sour cream. Keep a second tin of CP's so you can adjust to taste if you over season.

Re: Chick or Split Peas
Definitely have dried ones in Villa Mkt. Bought some there about 3 weeks back. Good to use after soaking overnight, and sprout like fresh peas if drained & kept in the fridge for a couple of days.
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....
Re: Chick or Split Peas
Thanks everybody, Villa Market had the dried Chick Peas and also canned under the GARBANZO name.but Tesco had neither.

PET,
I know you weren't looking for them, but did you by chance happen to notice if Villa had any black eyed beans?

Sorry, I did not notice, however they have stacks of different packets ( including split peas ) and I would think there is a VERY good chance that they have them.
Store location at the back past the vegetables and fruit and then look at the shelves on the right.
Good luck
