From a UK account to Bangkok Bank it takes about three days to clear and costs about £20, whatever the amount you send.( Edit-I've just checked and it goes up to £35 for sending amounts over £5,000.)
It's certainly cheaper than ATMs if you transfer a large amount. It depends on your bank in the UK but mine requires a letter, although they'll do it by fax as long as they can call you and verify it.
If you do this, just make sure you have all those security details on hand that banks ask you when they call these days as they seem to be able to judge the most inconvenient time to phone you!
I've done it many times and never had a problem with the funds arriving.
My UK bank doesn't allow internet international transfers but some European banks do which is obviously even easier.

I'm just reading on my banks website that they will do purely phone bank international tranfers now, which is news to me. It's a major UK high-street bank so I'm sure they're all pretty similar.
With Lloyds TSB, transfers can be made online from US$ and EURO accounts, but from GBP accounts have to give instructions by telephone banking or in writing.

Any clue to how much they charge etc?
Procedure to achieve it? Is it even possible?
How long to clear or is it instant?
Must be cheaper than pulling it all out the ATM.
Any comments are welcome.
HSBC have a branch in BKK. If you are a customer in the UK you can open an account there. It takes about a week to set up. You can then register for internet banking. Have a look on their website.
Spitfire, from the other end of the World, I transfer from Australia to Banglok fairly regularly... I can do this online and it is fairly instant*. Cost Au$22 (about 14 Pounds) regardless of amount... I have a choice of transferring in Au$ or Baht. Invariably I transfer Au$ as I get a better exchange rate. Also, my bank here changes me Baht 180 for the privilege of receiveing the transactions. But still beats using ATM.
* When I say "instant" .. it get to the Thai bank instantly but they like to hold onto it for a day to get a little interest for themselves...
Agree with Siani, HSBC in Bkk are excellent. You can hold foreign currency accounts and Thai baht. Withdrawals via any ATM are free in Bangkok and just 10 baht outside. Transferring money is simple and the staff couldn't be more helpful.

My U.S. bank (the biggest one, I think) will not allow online transfers to a bank that doesn't have a branch in the U.S.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
I always wonder about the restrictions and prizes of money transfer from GB or USA. I transfer any amount of money from my Swiss account to Thailand for 2 Swiss Francs (about 2 Dollars) per Transfer via Internet Banking.
I have a client who lives in Thailand, and we hand bills, etc, here in California.
Periodically I do online transfers to him. Once I did the first one all details were in the history and I can now do the transfer in minutes.
His bank is Bank of America who only this past year started to allow the international transfers online.
Cost is a flat $45 on this end, don't know about Bangkok Bank where he has his accounts.
Thanks Migrant,
That is my bank and I didn't realized they had changed their policy. Last time I checked you had to show up at a branch in person to do an international transfer, therefore one could not be initiated from this end. That is a high cost. They used to have two kinds of transfer, a one time at that rate and you could set up a recurring (monthly, etc.) automatic one at a much lower rate. I wonder if they are doing that internationally now... would save me a lot of money.
BTW, is it possible that you are able to do the transfers you mentioned because Bangkok Bank is the only Thai bank that does have a U.S. branch (in New York)?

My experience of Swiss banks is that they charge for absolutely everything and they possibly can, and no small amount also.
Your quote for transfers overseas is good and very competitive but I can only presume it is an exception
I only say this in case members think that costs are low in Swiss banks.
