That is my bank and I didn't realized they had changed their policy. Last time I checked you had to show up at a branch in person to do an international transfer, therefore one could not be initiated from this end. That is a high cost. They used to have two kinds of transfer, a one time at that rate and you could set up a recurring (monthly, etc.) automatic one at a much lower rate. I wonder if they are doing that internationally now... would save me a lot of money.

BTW, is it possible that you are able to do the transfers you mentioned because Bangkok Bank is the only Thai bank that does have a U.S. branch (in New York)?
Hi HHF

I used to have to go in, but about 6 months ago it changed. I've sent him up to $9,000usd at one time for the $45

They do send a confirmation code, which I get on my cell phone as a text message to finalize, but I believe they can send as a e-mail too, I will check.

I also believe I sent one transfer to another bank when he wanted to buy something, but will again check

Just as an update/epilogue to this thread for anyone interested, I managed with ease yesterday to transfer money from UK bank to the Krung Thai bank, no dramas.

All that was required was.....

Krung Thai SWIFT code.....
Name of the Thai bank the account is held at.....
Your name and account number at the Thai bank.......
Area code of the Thai bank (usually a 3 digit code on the main info page of the bank book)

Once transfered, take 2 days to clear in the Krung Thai bank....
Cost 30 UK pounds (way cheaper than the ATM)....
May also be a nominal/tiny charge from the Thai bank, not sure yet as haven't closely inspected it yet....

Can we try to pick this one apart to see if any security shortfalls? It's unusual in this day and age to allow phone transfers without having first formally registered the 'send to' account and to verify that you are really you. First off, what kind of questions did your UK bank ask you to prove it was you? Pete

Someone who has joint control over one of my bank accounts went into the UK bank and OK'ed it along with the below on the phone, think you Americans call it "The power of attorney."

Usually, also with UK banks they take you through security questions on the phone like date of expiry of account card/birth date/UK house postcode/trick questions about your account like overdraft limit even if you don't have one etc on the account.

The American banks may be more paranoid than the UK ones too, doubt there's a universal proceedure to all of this.

Thanks, that explains it. Yes, banks are different. With my US bank repetitive and single wire transfers have to be registered in person at one of their branches. In Hong Kong if to a non-account holder in or out of HK, registered by mail. If to an account holder, can be done by internet but you have to also reply to an SMS message to your phone with a special code. Pete

I transfer money regularly from my UK account to my Thai account. I do an online international transfer through The Halifax Bank Of Scotland. The cost is £9.50 per transaction regardless of the amount, if i send it first thing in the morning it is normally cleared and in my account in Thailand next day. If i send it later in the day say mid afternoon it can take 2 days to reach my Thai account ... hope this helps G-man

I just did a $9,000 transfer from Bank of America to my client in LOS.

All done on internet for $35.

Verification was a code sent to my cell phone (prearranged when I set up the first transfer so don't remember options).

Complete in 5 minutes and money was available the next day.

Swamped now with tax season but will try to find out options for those overseas.
