Thats my team because?
Re: Thats my team because?
Actually BaaBaa, I was referring to the Geordies. I even got spat at by a women there!
Liverpool was special because my Dad had been there and loved it, mainly the atmosphere. He told me he would take me, but never got around to it.
Not often an opposition player scores a hat-trick there and still ends up on the losing team!

A thing to add to my own story: My cousin who is 13 years younger than I and doesn't know the difference between football and a mitten has been living in Woolwich Arsenal, the original location of AFC for about 7 years now. I think, I must go there for a pilgrimage next time I'm in Lunnun. My cousin says there are some nice pubs in the area as well.

For someone like me who is from a country that didn't even know what soccer was until the 1980's, It' just a stab in the dark. I picked Newcastle as they are in the Northeast and I am originally from the NE USA. Many British named towns there, Newcastle being one. I also visited Newcastle Australia once so that clinched it.
You really have to grow up with a team as so many have said here, and as I've done with MLB and NFL, to be a true fan. It does give one like me the luxury of moving house though, which I may do soon as I like certain Boston based owners, and loath the owner of my current residence.

interesting point pete & i think you may find, unlike marriage, once you have your team at an early age & taken your vows, it really is until death do us partprcscct wrote: You really have to grow up with a team as so many have said here,

Pete - the game is FOOTBALL - not soccer, not rugby football, not American football but good old fashioned English FOOTBALLprcscct wrote:For someone like me who is from a country that didn't even know what soccer was until the 1980's, It' just a stab in the dark.

SOCCER is an overused Americanism in my books

For me it was always Spurs.
My mother & father were from the East End of London but grew up and worked in Tottenham in their youth. Dad used to take me to many of the home games at The Lane when I was a boy - couldn't afford to go to the away games.
In the fifties, we still made the journey to the home games from our new home in Northolt - North West London.
I guess when you are 'weened' on a team it sticks with you for life.

My two lads support Liverpool and Chelski - they have no taste

Re: Thats my team because?
For everyone's FYI, soccer is a word invented by the British and first used by the British. Plenty on Google.

touche Pete - touche
I still don't like the word..........
Anyway - it's good to have an American supporting the game and I've always had a soft spot for Newcastle - except when they play Spurs of course

Re: Thats my team because?
Thanks Terry. I've been supporting it for a long time and even an AYSO kids coach 1984-87. I also prefer the word football as that's the correct word for the group I'm associating with here. I used soccer above as I had reference to the NFL and Stateside sports in the same post. PeteTerry wrote:touche Pete - touche

Whilst I was born a cockney, my parents moved to S.E.London when I was still a babe in arms. An uncle took me to watch my first match - Charlton v Plymouth (before your time BB) and I've supported Charlton ever since.
The most exciting match I have ever seen was at the Valley when the Addicks beat Huddersfield 7-6 after being down 5-1.
How times have changed! Back then, there was a maximum wage (ten quid a week if I remember correctly) and those on the field were players not actors.

Shame on you Terry for letting your kids "choose" a team, you should have conditioned them from an early age, even if it was for Spurs.
