I read this in Tuesday's edition of the Daily Mirror (12/04/11) and thought it may be of use.
Travelex has launched Send Money Now, a transfer service costing flat fee from 99p for a five day transfer and £7 for cash sent in two days.
The online service is immediate and you can make a payment from £25 up to £2,500 from your debit card anywhere in the world in four steps.
David Sear of Travelex said: 'Customers told us they wanted a simpler and more cost effective system. Send Money Now is secure and there's no registration required.
Having just spent £42 sending cash with Western Union I'm looking forward to trying this much cheaper option.

Re: Sending cash abroad
It's slightly better than Western Union for small figures but it's no better for somebody going to Thailand for a few months and using the ATM or transferring a load to a Thai Bank account.
It's a shame they've got a crappy exchange rate.

Re: Sending cash abroad
Western Union etc is a rip-off. I guess if you are sending money from Thailand to elsewhere then those from the Philippines probably know which is the cheapest medium as the are experienced with the remittances factor, at least to around here anyhow. I guess you are talking about sending it into LOS than away from here though.
I usually just use the SWIFT code system to bring in money to Thailand, pay the 10-20 pounds, depending on how much it is but you get the banks official rate here in LOS, not elsewhere. The ATMs here and many other places can get expensive.
Edit - Admittedly, you may need to organise yourself a little with the SWIFT code system prior to your request if doing it from one personal account to another, depends on your country's/bank's banking rules, otherwise you need someone at the other end to do/send it for you etc.
Also forgot to mention that obviously the exchange rate offered is key of course, with the SWIFT code system you get the official exchange rate (at least transfering into LOS anyhow) after paying the nominal amount, not the low company one quoted, probably about the same after all's said and done with the new service offered in the OP or not much in it really.

Avoid Western Union. Greedy charges and the worst F/X rate they can get away with.

'Flat fee' immediately followed by the word 'from'??Toonmad wrote:I read this in Tuesday's edition of the Daily Mirror (12/04/11) and thought it may be of use.

It's the exchange rate you need to worry about!
Re: Sending cash abroad
Sorry if I'm missing the obvious here, but have you considered using PayPal?

Re: Sending cash abroad
Here in California there is a big Thai community. The few times my wife has sent money she goes to a beauty parlor, the boss there pulls out a notebook. The wife gives her 100 - 500 usd and $10 fee.
Her brothers can get the money in one day.
The $10 is irregardless of the dollar amount and my wife says the exchange rate is very good. She is good with her money, and it's hers so I don't question, but she has looked at lots of alternatives.
I transfer money for a client from Bank of America to Bangkok bank about once every few months. The smallest is about $3,000, the largest was $16,000usd but the only fee is $35 usd. It's done with the swift code and he has access the next day.

Have a look at this:

I've used the FX Firm a few times - they build in the transfer fee into the rate so there's no fee. Went through without a problem either on the same day or the next.
