Fatalities while visiting Thailand

Post by bapak »

http://www.thailandtraveltragedies.com/

This website has been set up to list all occurrences of fatalities or serious illness contracted while visiting Thailand.

The idea for this site originated from the circumstances surrounding the mysterious passing of Sarah Carter, a healthy, intelligent and sensible person who took all available precautions in terms of injections & tablets, and yet came home in a coffin. Two months on, and her passing is still unexplained.

At present in Chiang Mai there are up to 7 unexplained deaths in very similar circumstances and equally unexplainable as that girls. All happened withing about 4-6 weeks of the 1st death.
Has been well reported both here in Australia as well as in Thailand.

I am sorry to hear of your loss but the website is not the right response to your grief. Thailand is no different to many countries and these type of things happen all over the world including New Zealand where each year tourists die as they do all over the world.
Your friends / relatives death seems to be a mystery but to try to make out that this only happens here in Thailand is wrong and it just comes across as a bitter attack for the sake of it.
Did the person who died not have insurance that covered medical emergencies so instead of calling a doctor to your room you could have gone to a hospital and sought emergency treatment there ?
A terrible tragedy but one that occurs throughout the world and not just Thailand.
Thailand is far from perfect but not the place you are trying to portray it as
Sorry !
I never forget a face but in your case I'll make an exception!

H20, I somehow don't think the OP is the grieving parent in this case, just reporting here the existence of this site, which has already received a lot of publicity.

I agree that bad things happen to tourists everywhere, but its the sheer indifference and incompetence of the authorities here, seemingly sometimes aided by the blase' attitude of some of our embassies, that comes as a shock to many, as in the Sarah Carter case and possible related deaths.

So I personally see this site as potentially a good thing, almost inevitable and probably long overdue. Only in that such negative publicity being actively promoted might actually make Thailand raise its game, which in many respects, it clearly needs to do and surely that would be a good thing.

However, on saying that, at the moment it appears unedited and available for anyone to air what they perceive as a grievance. I'm not sure the family kind of expected jet ski stories, possible mild food poisoning and the like to get added, or maybe they did? But I think if it is going to be relevant it will need managing and perhaps have different sections for different issues.

Isn't there still something similar about Bkk scams?

I wonder if statistics are kept on tourist deaths and the causes in various countries around the world? It would be interesting to see if Thailand is really any more dangerous to visit than say Mexico, the Philippines, or other popular tourist destinations.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Whilst I sympathize with the parents of this unfortunate child I don't agree with the general tone of the site after reading the comments; "Let's stop anyone going to Thailand again", "We can shut down tourism to Thailand", "God, I will never be going to Thailand again after reading these stories".

The main focus point of the site should be to pressure the establishments which have caused grief (naming and shaming) and try to recieve some sort of Justice (long shot, sure) rather than discrediting the whole of Thailand and it's people. Of course with this you could get disgruntled guys just spouting BS about establishments to drag their name through the mud so some sort of proof/evidence would be needed to back up each claim to give each one credibilty and ensure no establishment was the victim of hearsay hurting it's business.

Right now where is more dangerous than Mexico?
35,000 murders in the past two years. Visitors can easily be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is very mysterious and there seem to be some connecting treads-- the hotel, Japanese food.

The cause of death would seem to be Myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, quite rare and for it to happen in a cluster is very worrying.
