90-day tourist visas

Post by Onceadreamer »

After visiting Hua Hin 3-4 times a year, I plan to retire in HH this August. I typically arrive with a 30-day visa. How do I convert it to a 90-day visa? (I may do the retirement visa a bit later.)

Maybe a bit of terminology differences here.

On entry to Thailand most nations get a 30 day stamp without having any visa. This 30 days I believ may be extendable for 7 days but I am not sure.

If you have a tourist visa that is valid (within date) and you have not used up all the entries you will get a 60 day stamp. The 60 days can be extended (here in Hua Hin) and many other immigration offices around Thailand.

It is possible to get up to 4 entries on a tourist visa, one of which you will use on first entry. You can use the other three as and when required within the 6 month period. These 4 entry visas are often but not always only available in the passport holders home nation.

The next step up is a non-immigrant O. I would advise you get one of these if travelling to Thailand frequently. You can get a multiple entry visa and each time you enter you will get a 90 day stamp.

The best way to get one of these is in your home country where you will not have to show any cash.

Do a web search for Consultes Thailand and you will be able to drill down to the office that is closest to you.

I know of no way that a 30 day stamp can be converted to a tourist vis inside Thailand. It can be done in Penang Malaysia though.

As Guess has said, there is no way to convert a 30 day entry stamp into a visa. Always remember that, strictly speaking, the 30 day stamp is not a visa.
The tourist visa is again as Guess has stated, but it cannot be extended into any other longer type one.
What you need is a Non Immigrant Visa, of whatever sort. There are many different types and if you search the Thai Immigration web site, you'll find them all.
If you're looking to retire, you will be able to obtain a single entry Non O, good for 90 days, in pretty much any country outside of Thailand. You might also be able to get a multiple entry of the same type. The thing is that you need the non O to then go to any imm office here in Thailand and apply for a year's extension on the basis of retirement - ie, you're over 50 and have 800,000 B in a Thai bank account, or an income of 65,000 per month.
Once you've got the extension, you only need to report to an imm centre every 90 days. Not exit the country. The extensions are renewable "forever" as long as you meet the requirements laid down by imm at that time. You are allowed to apply for the extension during the last 30 days of any one 90 day entry on your original visa.
Hope that helps.
The main thing is that nothing is extenable to a retirement/marriage etc etc visa other than a Non O.

Having just seen your post, MartinJ, you need to be a bit more specific about your plans. Certainly, if you're coming over regularly, as a tourist, it might pay, both financially and hassle wise, to apply for a 2/ 3 entry tourist visa. Each entry gives you 60 days, that can be extended for a further 30 days at any imm centre in Thailand for 1,900 baht.
The thing is that the visa will only be valid for 6 months, I think!!!(Maybe 9 if triple??). So, if you're not coming here for the second or third time within the validity of the visa, you lose an entry. Hope that makes sense. The validay of the visa is paramount. If you enter a couple of days before it expires, you'll get the 60 days, extendable on request for a further 30. Your entry stamp then supercedes the visa.
It's really the hassle factor. If you expect to be here for over 30 days, it's probably beneficial to get a tourist Visa. If you're only coming over for say 14/21/30 days at a time, then the entry stamps should sufice. These stamps can be extended for 7, or 10 days, for 1,900. Imm centres vary around the counry as to what you can apply for. On your next visit to HH, just pop down to the imm centre here and ask. They're helpful.
