Brand new German/Thai restaurant in Takiab!

Post by hhfarang »

Too many new restaurants and not enough time!

We've been driving by an odd looking stucco building on Soi 91 (beside the turn to go to the Brahma Shrine) for a while now but it was always boarded up. I knew it had to be a restaurant but it was never open. Today we came by and there was a sign out front that said "Open Today 17:00". The front door was open so I had to stop and see what it was.

It turns out that it is a German restaurant (with Thai food also), but I mean real German. The hand written menu was several pages long full of all the German dishes I remember from the many months I spent in Munich and Berlin. There was a very nice Thai lady in there and she said they have Thai food too but haven't made up that part of the menu yet. The dining room itself was really nice and reminded me of a small European cafe.

The name of the place is D-Mark but they don't have a sign yet. Tonight is opening night and it is located on Soi 91 about a kilometer from Petchkasem road on the right side just past a big housing development called Sea Breeze (I think that's the name, but it's the only development on that soi). You can't miss it as it is right on the road and is a white stucco building with wooden windows.

I'll try it soon and report back, but if anyone is in the mood for German food this place has an extensive menu of it and the lady claimed it was authentic German (probably her husband/boy friend is from there). She said that starting out they will only be open for dinner but after business picks up they will open all day. Prost!

HHF What is the best dish to order? I know you do not know the menu but I am not all that familiar with German dishes. :P

Siani, German food is mostly "meat and potatoes" dishes and while maybe not the healthiest of food types or lowest in calories, some of it is very tasty. It's hard to recommend which is the best, but a common one that is a good introduction to German food imo is Weiner Schnitzel which is usually breaded and fried veal (I've seen some places in Thailand use pork!). Besides potatoes, the typical vegetable side dish is sauerkraut which is made from (fermented, I think) cabbage.

I haven't eaten there yet, but below is what typical weiner schnitzel looks like. I'm sure there are German members on the forum that can recommend many more dishes but this is one of my favorites (bear in mind, I grew up in the southern U.S. where nearly everything was breaded and fried!)

I would suggest an "uberschnozzelbratschenwurst" - it's a little known dish from former German colonies in Africa. A photo can be seen in the current caption competition!
This is the way

It's Wiener Snitzel, but it actually is not German, it's Austrian. Probably the most well known German dish is Saurbraten. I'm sure they will have Bratwurst and Jager Snitzel too.

If we take hhfarang's spelling 'Weiner Schnitzel' and Typically Tropical's version 'Wiener Snitzel' and blend them somewhat, we arrive at the correct spelling 'Wiener Schnitzel', meaning 'Vienna cutlet' and so originally from Austria

Can't argue with the spelling of D-M's dish, though

No, only the south German food (Bayern) is similar, but more in the north it is completely different. I spent the first 24 years of my life in Austria.

You're probably right, I spent most of my time (nearly a year) in Munich (Bavaria) which is in the south near Austria. I actually only spent a few weeks north in Berlin and it seemed more like Paris than Munich.

Go about a kilometer past the flyover at the south end of Hua Hin and look for Soi 91 on the east side of the road. I'm not sure if it's marked, but it's opposite Soi 116 on the west side (same road) where there is a 7/11 (on the opposite corner) and soi 91 is beside some shop houses. Soi 91 runs to downtown Takiab from Phetkasem road but there is little reason to use it unless you live in Sea Breeze so it's not a familiar soi to many.

Once you see the 7/11 on your right (at soi 116 on Phetkasem), take the same road on your left toward the ocean and Takiab and you will find the restaurant directly after the only development on your right hand side. It sounds complex, but it's not. There is not much on this road and it's easy to spot even though it doesn't have a sign yet because it is white stucco outside with old style (hurricane) opening wood windows and is directly past the only western style housing development on on the soi.

Yes, sorry, I'm not sure it it's actually in Takiab, Hua Hin, or either (sort of in between) Soi 91 comes out right in the middle of Takiab if you follow it across the railroad tracks and continue and you can get to the restaurant from the Takiab side too (I wouldn't do that though as there is lots of road construction going on on both sides of the canal near the railroad), but the restaurant is closer to the highway or Phetkasem road as you go from Hua Hin to Pranburi.
