League 2
League 2
This is a perpetually diminishing thread each year. I hope it will be back to League 1 next season.
The good news is that the Green Army's survival plan has been accepted by the football league for next season, and they will be included in next Friday's fixture list.
All we need now are some players. We're curently down to a squad of 12. The vultures are still hovering, with Premiership sides lining up to steal the last 2 international players. Having caught a cold on Bolasie, who was allowed to give 14 days notice of intent to leave (because he hadn't been paid since last January), leaving the Green Army with only a 5 figure sum; the Green Army have since paid up the wages on their remaining internationals. At least the like of Spuds are going to be forced to pay the going rate now.
Unfortunately, when the internationals go, and 1 player injured until 2012, it looks as though we're going to start the season with just 9 players. I'd better polish my boots.

Here we go again, the Scottish Premiership (whose fans believe their teams could compete in the English Premier League) are starting to pick up the scraps from a failing English Div 4 side

Premier League? They're 'avin' a laugh.

Ok, to take up the challenge, come on you Seagulls: Torquay, just for the sake of Fawlty Towers.

Just when I finished off writing the above, I came to think about another seagull story. It was back in 1977 but in Brighton, who are now in Championship but this song came to my mind and it's not because of Dylan.

Ahhh, Torquay - the natural enemy. Sounds like 6 easy points, and we've only 8 players at the moment.Bamboo Grove wrote:Ok, to take up the challenge, come on you Seagulls: Torquay, just for the sake of Fawlty Towers.

A nice link, but this is better http://www.greensonscreen.co.uk/ . It takes you back to the days when the Green Army had enough players to field a team, and stood proud.

Re: League 2
I shall be rooting for AFC Wimbledon this year & they do well.
After being mugged by MK Dons they've regrouped & made a miraculous recovery to achieve league status again
I have a feeling that Crawley will be the team to watch though
They stormed the conference, had a cracking FA cup run & already have the players to progress further up the football league ladder.
They've got good financial backing too

That means diddly squat this season. Wages can not be more than 55% of the clubs income (gate money etc).redzonerocker wrote:They've got good financial backing too

How about the rest of the leagues?
The prem needs a similar shake up it's getting beyond the joke now

Still think they'll do well with the squad they already have though

ps i hope your green army do ok too

Re: League 2
I think (but not 100% sure) that it applies to the old divisions 2, 3 and 4. I think it was a new regulation passed for this season.
The problem for the Green Army was that they had 3 players still on lucrative Championship wages/contracts. They've managed to get rid of 2, but Walton is a bit of a leech. We're lumbered with him for a further season - nobody else wants him.

Re: League 2
I used to live in Macclesfield who are in the same league as Plymouth.
This will be their 15th season in the Football League which is quite an achievment as they only get gates of 1500.
They always used to be a Northern Premier League side, never mind a Conference one.
The season they got promoted to the Conference 86-87 their opening fixture at home to Oswestry Town in the NPL drew a crowd of just 195.
They struggled in the Conference for a few years then Sammy McIlroy took over as manager and they got into the Football League.
They even got promoted in the first season and played in the same league as Manchester City,Fulham and Stoke for one season before being relegated.
Since then its mainly been a struggle in League 2 but they have got a decent enough manager in Gary Simpson who believes in bringing in young players.
Incidentally,Crawley have just signed Maccs star striker,Tyrone Barnett, for a five figure sum and the Silkmen are quoted at 80-1 to win the title this season !
