I'd be interested to find out how often our posters that live in Thailand travel outside of the country.
We like to travel, and our plan for when we live in Thailand includes travel around Asia and periodically back here to the States. The States is, of course, the expensive travel, but we also want to see China, Vietnam, etc etc.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.
You have to break it down between those who have kids and those who don't. When a little one comes along it indeed throws a wrench into the impromptu foreign travel works, especially when they start school.
I personally have been all over Asia for so long it's not really a thrill any longer. I have come to enjoy in-country trips very much though. I live in a very developed and one could say westernized area here in Rayong, about like most of the coastal areas are these days. I like getting back to rural up-country Thailand as often as we can, and the wife isn't even from there. She gets intimidated sometimes as she can't understand the dialect. Pete

Yes Pete, you're absolutely right. Once the kids come along and start school, travel quite literally goes out the window. It also becomes very expensive when you're paying for five rather than two...lol.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact
I have no kids, and I haven't been outside Thailand (other than a few hours in a Burmese border town by car once) since October 2005. The reasons will be obvious in the "cost of living" thread.
That may explain some of my crazy posts . I think I literally have "Island" or "Cabin" fever from not seeing the outside world in nearly six years.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Taking the train is one way to save money and take lots of amazing views, as a suggestion check out this website. It has up to date information about global train routes.
Three times in 14 years, a week in Burma and the Philippines twice ... someone above mentioned kids, schools and bills which generally puts all overseas holidays far from reach!

We leave every 90 days for visa purposes - could change to "retirement" but we like the excuse to go somewhere. Air Asia offer reasonably priced air fares throughout the region. Having said that it is also nice to travel within Thailand.
I travel a lot with work with the occasional trip with the wife and 2 kids....
Having kids doesn't mean you need to stop travelling, it just makes it a bit more work, but the kids love the traveling...it's great experience and I feel my kids have developed a lot from travelling.
