OscarMike wrote:To lindos and the rest of the gang, I have no problem since I have found a solution, if you want to get rid of a pest you keep using pesticides until it is gone, there are far more termites than dogs in Thailand so we keep poisoning them, we'll never really get rid of them but we keep them at bay. That is all I want to do with the dangerous packs of soi dogs.
Why oh why do people get so up in arms about ferral dogs is beyond me - I've been blamed for not managing my land, told I shouldn't stay in Thailand because I cant afford a fence, been told its my fault that packs of dangerous mutts are roaming the lands, and been called stupid several times in this thread. I have not insulted a single person here yet I get this abuse.
From my angle it seems the lunatic dog lovers are the ones getting wound up here. Now ... who wants some warfarin ...

I've also been told that land that is considered "unused" can be confiscated by the authorities after a certain period of time, which is why we fenced in the plot we had. Also, while I may be wrong, I think the law here actually requires you to fence your property if you want to keep unwelcome guests out/off.

That is terrible, hope she does get better soon. Make sure you do not live next door to a dog hater.hhfarang wrote:I've been skipping this thread because they all turn into a war of dog lovers vs dog haters. But:
I have two soi dogs we adopted as puppies and the female is a beautiful dog resembling a golden retriever. One of her assets is/was her beautiful two colored tail reddish brown and white that she always held proudly in a curl above her back when not wagging it at us.
Our dogs have a big fenced garden to play and exercise in so I don't take them out of the yard, but when we open the front gate (remote) to drive out or in or to let someone else in they like to go out and sniff around the immediate neighborhood for a few minutes. They never fail to come back to the gate to be let in within 5 to 15 minutes and neither dog has ever bitten anyone.
Yesterday, someone came and the gate was opened and our dogs were out for about ten minutes and when they returned the female had what appears to be a broken tail right where the tail meets the body. There was a big lump there where someone obviously hit her hard with a stick or rock. This is a nice dog who wouldn't hurt anyone and has a collar and is well kept so could not be mistaken as feral.
In my opinion, anyone who would harm a dog that is not threatening them physically is a (something against forum rules)!
Now my girl walks with her tail between her legs and if you touch it she whimpers. Whoever did this better hope I don't find out their identity.
Here she is before yesterday:
This quote is the best reply. Indeed why are dogs hanging around if ther is no food available?Takiap wrote:OscarMike wrote:there are far more termites than dogs in Thailand so we keep poisoning them, we'll never really get rid of them but we keep them at bay.
Not all of usI've never used any pesticides on our property. I don't even use fertilizers, herbicides, and etc. Personally I can't see what the big fuss is about with termites, unless you have a wooden home. We've been in this house for just on six years and never had any problem with termites. Ants were sometimes a problem but the chickens soon solved that.
Whatever you decide to do OM, just watch that you don't piss off the locals - it's not worth your life. Also, while I may be wrong, I think the law here actually requires you to fence your property if you want to keep unwelcome guests out/off. If it's not fenced, you just have to put up with animals coming onto your land. Sure you can poison them, but as others have pointed out, more will move in, and if you simply keep poisoning them, sooner or later you're going to be found out, and remember, the Thais don't report things like that to the police......they take matters into their own hands![]()
As a matter of interest, do you have workers on the property? I can't see why the dogs would be hanging around your place if they're not getting anything to eat there. We stay in quite a built up area now, and while you do see the odd stray here and there, there really aren't many because nobody puts food out, so they move on.
Slightly off topic, but for those who may be interested, the municipality actually hold free "dog fixing clinics" every once in a while, but of course this is only advertised in Thai. This begs the question why more Thai don't get their dogs fixed, considering they can get it done for nothing.![]()
Okay.....
