Hot potato this subject is, as always, and passions running high on both sides.

I'm all for a solution of the final type to clear the problem up, but more on a public health and safety angle for all rather than a personal property one.

However, whatever your view is, nothing is going to happen because the authorities don't give a toss and neither do the locals, there's no will to do anything and much to their detriment and image imo.

The problem has been allowed to fester for too long and a certain acceptance of it (the present status quo) has developed and is now being considered as normal, which I disagree with.

To lindos and the rest of the gang, I have no problem since I have found a solution, if you want to get rid of a pest you keep using pesticides until it is gone, there are far more termites than dogs in Thailand so we keep poisoning them, we'll never really get rid of them but we keep them at bay. That is all I want to do with the dangerous packs of soi dogs.

Why oh why do people get so up in arms about ferral dogs is beyond me - I've been blamed for not managing my land, told I shouldn't stay in Thailand because I cant afford a fence, been told its my fault that packs of dangerous mutts are roaming the lands, and been called stupid several times in this thread. I have not insulted a single person here yet I get this abuse.

From my angle it seems the lunatic dog lovers are the ones getting wound up here. Now ... who wants some warfarin ...

If you're going down that barbaric route, OM, I suggest you invest in some ear plugs. It can sometimes be a slow and agonising death, with whines, wimpers and howls.

I don't belong to any 'gang', but, after living in Thailand for several years have become more tolerant of things that would have been intolerable in the West.

It really is a joke that the dog killers want to poison and shoot their way out of the problem. Why not do it properly and start a campaign to control this ongoing problem? Bribing the police with vodka, a terrible idea :? What more corruption? Do you really want to live in a country where you have to have such a high security level such as electric fences? Do we have to build a fortress to feel safe from dogs and burglars?
I do not like snakes too much, but would neve dream of killing one either.
Oscar mike...you seem to enjoy killing dogs? "Shot one the other day that I found asleep under the building ... never seen a dog move so fast." You sound a great guy :?

Anyway..some idea for those that live in fear of dogs and burglars :P

I've seen a three year old Thai child chase away a pack of soi dogs with a piece of twig slightly larger than a chopstick so I don't think there's any reason to get too upset.

Got to wonder why - just a week after asking in a sane manner how the problem could be controlled - and presumably reading all the replies and suggestions - you have suddenly found the (cheapest) - and probably most barbaric - answer anyway?
Is that a reasoned decision, or simply a reaction intended to shock and wind up the 'lunatic ferral tree huggers'? :?

Not all of us  I've never used any pesticides on our property. I don't even use fertilizers, herbicides, and etc. Personally I can't see what the big fuss is about with termites, unless you have a wooden home. We've been in this house for just on six years and never had any problem with termites. Ants were sometimes a problem but the chickens soon solved that.

Whatever you decide to do OM, just watch that you don't piss off the locals - it's not worth your life. Also, while I may be wrong, I think the law here actually requires you to fence your property if you want to keep unwelcome guests out/off. If it's not fenced, you just have to put up with animals coming onto your land. Sure you can poison them, but as others have pointed out, more will move in, and if you simply keep poisoning them, sooner or later you're going to be found out, and remember, the Thais don't report things like that to the police......they take matters into their own hands

As a matter of interest, do you have workers on the property? I can't see why the dogs would be hanging around your place if they're not getting anything to eat there. We stay in quite a built up area now, and while you do see the odd stray here and there, there really aren't many because nobody puts food out, so they move on.

Slightly off topic, but for those who may be interested, the municipality actually hold free "dog fixing clinics" every once in a while, but of course this is only advertised in Thai. This begs the question why more Thai don't get their dogs fixed, considering they can get it done for nothing. :banghead:

I've also been told that land that is considered "unused" can be confiscated by the authorities after a certain period of time, which is why we fenced in the plot we had.

I've been skipping this thread because they all turn into a war of dog lovers vs dog haters. But:

I have two soi dogs we adopted as puppies and the female is a beautiful dog resembling a golden retriever. One of her assets is/was her beautiful two colored tail reddish brown and white that she always held proudly in a curl above her back when not wagging it at us.

Our dogs have a big fenced garden to play and exercise in so I don't take them out of the yard, but when we open the front gate (remote) to drive out or in or to let someone else in they like to go out and sniff around the immediate neighborhood for a few minutes. They never fail to come back to the gate to be let in within 5 to 15 minutes and neither dog has ever bitten anyone.

Yesterday, someone came and the gate was opened and our dogs were out for about ten minutes and when they returned the female had what appears to be a broken tail right where the tail meets the body. There was a big lump there where someone obviously hit her hard with a stick or rock. This is a nice dog who wouldn't hurt anyone and has a collar and is well kept so could not be mistaken as feral.

In my opinion, anyone who would harm a dog that is not threatening them physically is a (something against forum rules)!

Now my girl walks with her tail between her legs and if you touch it she whimpers. Whoever did this better hope I don't find out their identity.

Here she is before yesterday:

As far as I know, it's not only the authorities who can claim the land. I was told that if someone occupies vacant unfenced land for a specific period of time, they are then entitled to claim it legally. I could be wrong though.

This quote is the best reply. Indeed why are dogs hanging around if ther is no food available?
The free dog fixing clinics sound a way forward, but maybe hard to catch the dogs.

I do however think that in Thailand culling of wild dogs should take place, to make it a healthier, safer place. They are also a danger to motorists. It is a kinder approach to the serious problem. :)
