Yes, it is the Muppets now Lindos but the late Jim Henson introduced them all originally on Sesame Street long ago. That's where my obsession to murder that pig all started!

Canthai, I'm across the water in Rayong. Am sure others who have contributed to this thread have an idea about the Hua Hin area. Pete

I have kept away from this thread as I heave not tried the pig sold in Cha Am, although I have looked at it. The photo posted by TimandT is not "suckling pig", as rightly stated.

It may well be very good and tasty, but "suckling pig, Chinese style", as asked about by the OP, is that dish shown and described by Pete, and even that is very close to the maximum size used.
The whole point of using such a young animal is because of the fact that it has only been fed on its mothers milk for a few weeks, and is high in collagen, which gives it the unique taste.

I have not seen it in Thailand, but I am sure that you could find it in some Chinese, expensive restaurants, such as another poster has mentioned about having to order it at a Hotel.
I got hooked on this when I lived in Singapore many years ago, and the Chinese contractors would take us out to a restaurant that specialized in cooking them. And I dare say that it probably contributed to why I had such high cholesterol. :thumb:

For Canthai: there was a pig being cooked on a hand turned spit just inside Soi 6 a couple of weeks ago. I do not know if it was for private use, or for one of the many small food shops along there, but it may be worth asking someone around there.

One note about these party pigs, or pig for parties  , if you ask a restaurant to cater a party, they'll contact the pig company and arrange them to bring the roaster and pig over and cook it up in front of your guests. Of course with this arrangement you'll pay a mark up, but it's an alternative to hunting round for a pig cooker yourself. Pete

Prccst is correct re: correct suckling pig as found in HK, Singapore, Malaysia. The Cha-am version is basically roast pork. Nice but not as good as the real thing - Miss Piggy included.

Yes, you are right that it is bbq pork, It's not suckling pig chinese style. There is a famous one in bangkok @ Tang Yai Joo, but I'm not driving there just for some suckling or should I? ;D The chinese brush skin with soy sauce until it is crisp, then they cut of the fat underneath and put the skin back before it's served. You can see it in anthony bourdain's Thailand visit part 3.

The pigs shown in the photo in this thread are most likely "weaners". That is the first stage after a pig has been taken from the sow and fed solid food.

hhfarang wrote:OMG, Thanks Pete, now you've put me off that dish forever... :D eating a baby pig before it's even finished with it's mother's milk sounds a bit barbaric. I know, veal and lamb are the same or worse but at least I don't see them in their original form sitting on the table as in your pig photo above. I love meat but the only thing I ever want to see in it's whole, original state on my plate or a platter would be seafood as in a fish or a shrimp (I don't even eat whole crab or lobster, but I'll eat crab meat or a lobster tail).

I'm an animal lover softie at heart, but I still can't bear the thought of being a vegetarian as I love meat, but don't like to think about where it came from or how it got to my plate.
Off topic a little but I won't eat anything that's ugly. Pigs, Cows, Lambs, Fowl, Deer, etc all reasonably cute. Lobster, Squid, Escargots, Grubs, etc all ugly, hence they don't get eaten. :]

Mods - I think you can delete my post now.

Khii Len asked for someone to fix the web address ,as he hasn't had enough posts for you tube vids, so that people could see the video he was referring to. I helped out then hours later you responded, deleted his request and left me looking like a plum for posting the exact same same video 2 posts later. Thanks for that then. :duck:

GLCQ, I apologise for making you look like a plum (but if the hat fits :D ). I was on my work laptop, which does not show everything. I wasn't aware of what you had done.

No harm done.
