I think life in Thailand changed my attitude to food forever. There's still the temptation of British new potatoes in season, but overall I probably have potato in one form or another here no more than twice a week. Red meat rarely. Rice has become the staple, along with stirfries, curries and chilli like Rogers wife used to make at Sabai.
Unfortunately it is difficult to find decent broad PadThai noodles where I live but the search goes on. Asdas' so called Udon noodles don't hack it.

Did egg sarnies for the darts team this week and slung chilli flakes in... there's no hope!

I like both. Perhaps due to the amount of time I've spent here I can take more (chili) heat than before, but the variety is what I like. In any country than I've been to, I'll always take the local fare as that's what they're good at. However due to my Asian (Singapore) roots and tastebuds honed by an upbringing during the transition of colonial to republic era, I tend to be quite the gourmet.

Many Thai friends are surprised that I will eat stuff that has 'pla raa' (fermented fish) in it, that I insist on putting 'kapi' (prawn paste - the smelly one) in many dishes - we call it belachan in Singapore and it is an essential ingredient in many local dishes.

These same friends are also appalled that I will go to Chinatown and seek out exotic food like the Chinese-style pork brain soup (yum!) and that I complain when no 'spare parts' are included with my khao mun gai (chicken rice). Love Indian food as well, surprisingly the best lamb biryani I've had is just round the corner from the Bangkok hospital in Petchaburi road, beats even the best I've had in Singapore. My brother (when he tried it) wholeheartedly agreed.

I do enjoy a decent steak on occasion, but am now trying to reduce my red meat intake.

I'm pretty much a human garbage pail, in that I'll eat (or try at least once) almost anything and I like most everything so am not a picky eater at all. When I marred my Thai wife 15 years ago and took her to the U.S., I ate nearly 100% Thai food for the eight years we lived there together before retiring and coming here because it was not only a novelty with me (at first) but she is a very good cook and I loved it. Being from Issan, she used 10 to 20 chilies in every dish but I like spicy, so for a while that was no problem either. Then, I had a severe stomach problem and had to have surgery. The doctor actually told us it was partly caused from years of eating too many chilies in the food. I still love Thai food and still like it a bit spicy, but since then she has cut back severely on the number of chilies.

Plus, now, after eating Thai food for so many years and living here for so many years, I tend to have tired of it a bit and probably eat more western that Thai, maybe 70/30 these days.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Not as good as the myriad of Chinese/Indian/Malay offerings IMO. Even the vegie varieties are limited. However the fruits - yum, yum!

Ahh, Mags. Once a year, for two weeks usually in early June, I stuff myself with new potatos and herring.

I ate Thai food very often when I lived in the US and constantly when I lived in Phuket, but now I eat mostly western food. I eat Thai food maybe twenty percent of the time.

I ate hot food most of my life but at 55 I can't handle it anymore. My mouth still loves it, but my digestive tract suffers terribly. What little Thai food I still eat isn't hot, and even som tam I order with only two chilis.

Well I'm going to treat myself tonight

A couple of roll-mops, boiled pots, pitta bread and some stir fried veg in oyster sauce. Just what my doc recommends

Sort of a Scandi/Thai fusion jobbie :munch: :munch: :munch:

Where, pray-tell, do you get these in HH? I've only seen them in Villa and they're far too sweet and small for my liking.

Villa market

Big jars up on top shelves (almost out of sight for a shrimp like me)

500g and 5 big fillets. Yes a bit too sweet for me but hey, TIT I'm not in Denmark or Sweden to have the real thing

On another fishy note. I really do miss my kippers but sources in HH seem to have gone up in smoke (to coin a phrase) ...............DAVE?

I'm preaching about fish because my doc says I should shun meat and eat more fish. Please no smutties about the last remark

Ah Richard - once upon a time on Bintabahn was a little restaurant called Checkpoint Charlie, and the owner - Ouvre - did build a smoke house in the back yard and did smoke his own fish and hams.... and we did pay homage on a regular basis.

The it went tits up and the lady for land caused him to flit. TIT.
