Europa League

Post by Bamboo Grove »

A new thread, which I will start while I still have some happy things to write about. The team of Helsinki, HJK, not my favourite Finnish team, thank you very much, beat Schalke from Germany 2-0 tonight. Also many British teams are doing well at the moment.

Scores will update automatically
Celtic 0-0 FC SionL
FC Thun 0-1 StokeFT
Fulham 3-0 DniproL
Hearts 0-3 TottenhamHT
Nacional 0-0 BirminghamHT
NK Maribor 0-1 RangersHT

Good showing from Spurs today. Though it was against weak opposition we completely pulled them apart in the first half. Nice to see Defoe get on the score sheet early on. Let's hope he can put a few more in this season and become the kind of striker we desperately need.
Van Der Vaart outstanding again, Bale doing his thing and hope he can stay fit this season.

Be a different ball game this weekend but I certainly like what I see from Spurs' first game of the season.

Naughty! :P

Spurs jaunt at Hearts was more like a training game than the real thing, with a 0-5 away win. Any reason for Modrics absence? :)

Only Brum failed to win from the English sides.

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS insists Chelsea will not be held to ransom over Luka Modric.

The Blues have already had two bids turned down for by Tottenham for playmaker Modric.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is determined to hang on to his man and Villas-Boas has hinted he is ready to look elsewhere if Tottenham do not accept a final offer of £30million.

I liked this 'comment' under the skysports article:
arry the spur says August 18, 2011 9:05pm

With Cech out of action for a month perhaps Chelsea should forget Modric and spend the 30 million on Gomes
It's a done deal!

Interesting to see Gomes starting and Friedel on the bench last night... :?

Would you have Friedel as the no#1 keeper at spurs now Dtaii Maii?

I'm torn between the two, sometimes Gomes can produce a sublime 90 minutes of goalkeeping then other games.... well you know the rest.

I think Friedel just has that consistency which you really need as a goalie, butr maybe Gomes can get to that point. How old is Gomes out of interest?

Gomes is 30, so pretty much in his prime for a keeper. Age-wise, anyway.
Sure, he has some great games, but he has way too many crap ones. I reckon he cost us a top 4 finish last season, even allowing for out of form strikers.
Ask me again in 2 weeks, though!

Wow, thought Gomes was younger than that, it's not something he's going to iron out of his game then, Friedel is a good solid keeper but I rated Cudicini, especially early in his Chelsea days. He still on Spuds books?

Having a good keeper makes a world of difference, Liverpool have had their share of iffy ones in the past but godbless Pepe Reina, wouldnt swap him for any keeper!!

As did I!

Cudicini I believe has gone elsewhere but I may be mistaken.

A big weakness of Chelseas has been not replacing Cudicini. :(
