Free flow of ASEAN labour within the community & its impact

Post by bapak »

In 2015 the ASEAN / Asean Economic Community (AEC) will come into effect. This will mean the free flow of ASEAN labour within the community.
Speaking from the viewpoint of English language ability, the hospitality industry as an example, when seeking staff with some English fluency, will most likely accept an applicant from Singapore, Malaysia or the Philippines, in preference to a Thai.
We regularly get Thais coming to The Learning Centre inquiring about learning English as they want to apply for a job at a particular place. Invariably they will ask –“can we learn in a month” or similar. Of course, we tell them the facts of life, and never see them again.
I do not believe that the locals are aware of the impact 2015 will have on their lives.

That's if it's honoured as it is laid out (not just by Thailand but by the rest of them too), which might certainly not be the case as most of these ASEAN countries are simply only familiar with protectionism.

We also haven't seen much difference 'on the ground' after the so-called 'ASEAN free trade area' agreement was supposed to make trading across borders easier........my arse has it, we had a thread a while back about it would be nice if Beer Lao became more widely available at better prices instead of the silly prices asked for such stuff.

ASEAN is kidding itself if it thinks it's bringing down barriers to trade and employment around here anytime soon, also anyone who thinks that they are going to start casually employing people from Singapore or Malaysia that can speak English in preference to the Thais, who will become jobless, is also in cloud cuckoo-land.

This ain't Europe where most of the countries 'play ball' when an agreement is made, and once the Thais realise that their workforce is hopelessly unprepared/lazy to meet this challenge or there starts to be rising unemployment because they are not up to the job, then it will become a political issue and backtracking will be done whilst it will, in practice, be brushed under the carpet and not brought up.

It's safer for them all to remain inside the bubble of believing there is simply a black abyss beyond the members' countries borders.

ASEAN couldn't organise a wenching and drinking party on Soi Nana with 5 million baht.........useless talking shop that decides merely to "meet again soon" and announcing that no-one should comment or pass judgement on other members regardless of how much of a ludicrous way in which they are behaving.

This body of Avon ladies should grow a spine and 'lay it down' locally......but of course, that'll never happen.

Not just talking about LOS but the other members too.
