How do you discipline a Thai Boy

Post by Lung Per »

There may be instances when the son of the house is disobedient or commits acts which would require disciplining. I do not lay hands on children and prefer to set a good example through behavior.
However, there are times....
So: I realize that many if not all Thai schoolboys consider themselves as Gawd's gift to humanity and therefore can commit no wrong. I don't buy that, and I don't want to leave the missus to lose face because the boy misbehaves.
Question: What is a good method of disciplining a Thai boy without resorting to violence? I heard about touching his head is degrading for him, but there must be more?
I've simply got to get that spoiled attitude out of him.

Chores around the house and garden and pocket money rewards or deductions as appropriate

Worked with my 2 rebellious daughters when in their early teens

My parents beat that attitude out of me... :D ... and no matter what Sandman and the PC crowd say It worked in my case and in my brother's. We were both a handful and with the right amount of physical and mental punishment (probably a bit more than Guantanamo Bay  ), we both turned out to be productive members of society.

My ex used to threaten and swipe with a coat hanger.
I know you didn't want to hear about violence and the kids weren't mine so there was little I could say.
However, they very rarely misbehaved after that. Quite what's happened to her, I don't give a damn.

This is a THAI problem. And I have a feeling it's the general attitude of THAI boys. They are apparently brought to believe from birth that they are God's gift to mankind. And Thai parents apparently let them stay in that belief. No wonder why this country is going the way it is with no respect for rules or regulations. Just take a ride on your bike and you know what I mean.

I was out cycling one day and saw an old Thai woman beating a teen Thai boy with a 4 foot stick. He was running but she was getting some good shots in...

How old is the boy? Punishment by food is far worse than any physical punishment from a Thai perspective, eating is right up there with praying! If our little 'uns misbehave to that extent they get sent to their room without dinner - then I get the silent treatment from the mrs for being such an ogre.

First and foremost, a lot depends on whether or not they're your own kids. If they are, then in my opinion you can discipline them in any manner you see fit, within limits of course. I personally wouldn't smack my kids since I know there are other ways I can get to them. Hey, it's a real bummer when they go to the shop with you, and it's only you that gets anything, while they only get to watch. It's also a bummer when the TV suddenly stops working, or there's no spending money for school - many ways to skin a cat.

At the same time, I also don't think there's anything wrong with a hiding if it's deserved, but i think it if there is going to be any smacking, then it should be Mom that does it. Our ones get a slap on their backsides from time to time, and I have no problem with my wife doing so, but there would never be anything more than a slap. Then again, I have daughters, and ah well, Dads just don't smack their girls.

As Buksi pointed out, sending them to their room can be very effective.....it's like being sentenced to solitary confinement....lol.

The other way is of course winning them over. Dad needs to be a friend as well as a Dad..
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

Got to laugh. Put this thread with the 'do they think' thread and others on the forum and I've got to say - be careful what you wish for! Many farang are here because of the way Thai women are brought up to look after the god's gift male. It is just like the west pre 1960's and what most on this site are running away from.
