Where are the best eateries? In town or on the outskirts?

Forgot to mention..............some of the best tasting meals I've had have been cooked here at home by the in-laws, but of course these are dishes which aren't ever listed on menus.....just old fashioned Thai home cooking.

Oh definitely. Nothing comes close to my Mother-in-law's Rat Curry, and her grilled rat is tender and delicious.

The wife's specialty is Massaman (Better than any other place I've ever had it) and Gang Garee (Yellow Curry--but the southern variant with pineapple, sweet potato, and real curry powder) However our regular home fare is stir-fried veggies (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Snow Peas, beans, asparagus, Carrot, Chinese Cabbage all make regular appearances) with a little bit of meat (Chicken, Pork, or Shrimp) cooked in Oyster sauce.....YUM!

Yep, my mother-in-law makes some good ones that I've never seen anywhere else too. One vegetarian dish that I particularly like that they (the missus and her mom) call Laab Makua (sp?), which is a mashed, spiced eggplant dish that you dip into with a flattened ball of sticky rice. It's really delicious, and I'm normally an avid meat eater!

I'm not trying to be funny, but one could write an entire book on this subject because there are that many places to eat, most of whom are great. Of course much depends on whether you want Thai food or Farang food, and also on the type of setting you're after. For a really quality experience, I would have to recommend Nor Sor resort which is way up along soi 6, but well worth the trip.

On Soi 90 is Terrace 90 which has an extensive menu of good food from Thai food to Mexican, Italian, English, Swedish, American, etc.

Soi 94 has a very good Sushi/Japanese place (Sakura), at least one good Italian place (I think there are two or more), a decent Indian place, and several traditional Thai places, some which serve cheap (but palatable) western food.

We have three favorites on Soi 88; near town, Mini Farm; a kilometer or so up the road, Nata's, and in a nice setting further out in the countryside, Naab Thong (for great Thai food, beer, and fancy drinks at almost unbelievably low prices).

Others on the south end of town to downtown that we like are Best Beans Coffee in Takiab, The Tamarind Thai restaurant on the railroad tracks just north of the flyover, Seb Neur on the railroad track road a couple of hundred meters south of the train station (great Issan style food), Cool Relax (everything), and Delize (Italian), on Sa Song road a block or so south of the bus station and the Sirin Hotel restaurant beside McDonalds downtown (still some of the best Thai food around, been going there for nine years).

Yes, Minifarm (excellent Thai food) restaurant is just over the train tracks on Soi 88 (in the first block to the right, but on the left side), Nata's which has both excellent Thai and western food is further up across from the Mark Winn Lodge, and don't miss Naab Thong a bit further over the hill in the valley beyond as they also have excellent Thai food and mixed drinks at the best prices you will find (see their thread at the beginning of this section for photos and information).

Why leave an excellent Thai / European restaurant with a great (and very cheap) cocktail bar and to go back to the tourist area and drink expensive beer? Naab Thong (Soi 88) is a lot, lot cheaper for beer as well!

As for seafood - forget it.

Go to one of the specialist seafood restaurants - they buy up all the catch in advance. No non specialist restaurant owner particularly out in the sticks can get a look in - it's not worth their while trying.

On my trip to HH last week I discovered the so-called "Grand Night Market" off Petchkasem Road next to the San Paulo hospital (about soi 86). They had a large number of stalls, each specializing in a different kind of Thai food. Friendly, delicious and inexpensive. And I found stuff I was looking for which I had not found in other places such as fresh spring rolls (Kuay Tiew Lui Suan) and Khanom Jeen Naam Yaa Ga-ti.

Surprisingly hardly a tourist in sight. Quite a contrast to the much-touted night market in soi 72 which I found very full and hectic last week.

So this one is quite in town, but I didn't find it very touristy.

You are right in your description of Kuay Tiew Lui Suan and they are different from normal spring rolls, but Mark Wiens' Eating Thai Food Guide (and others on the internet) translates them as "Fresh Spring Rolls" and I was using that translation.

Don,t think you can beat eating out of town for value and quality. Living in hin Lek fai ihave eaten in many resturants and have found one of the best to be the Family Restuarant good food, good value and very nice helpfull staff, also good choice of menu and bbq on Sundays, with buy2 get 1 free on small beer.

for farang food i really like Sakura up soi 94,, soo soo good, although i don't go there as often as i would like. At nights when i get a craving for a good burger i like to go down town get me a Binta Burger, (its a cart that roams around down town) , then get fries from hot dog cart down the street and a beer at any random bar.

For thai food,, I like Music room, Pream, and a hand full of random little shops that are scattered all over town,, you kind of have to go into them and try them and find your favorite.

Im new to Hua Hin but like my food and so far i found:
Kiss Food and drink restaurant very good food and very large menu....good price,have eaten there many times..thai and the international dishes. Its by the Grand night market and next to boxing stadium.
i like the Pizzas at the corner restaurant near hilton rd,sorry forgot its name.
yoiyoi japanese restaurant in market village has some nice stuff.!
Mr burger was quite good for thai food.
the indian food in the Colonade is quite good but abit slow cooking....always 20 mins up even when empty or near empty but its good value ....i takeaway his chicken tikka rolls/wrap.
Thai(isan) food on petchkasem road outside the bank nr the grand market is really good.(you eat on pavement outside the bank)....bbq chicken great but sometimes too busy and have to take a number and wait for a seat,very very popular with thais eating there and cheap.
