Huge thanks to everybody for your help. This is Mr. Spark here - aka Vital Parahandy - and I'm the idiot that does the cooking thing round here, and was the one most interested in the bread maker. (V.S. was really only interested in the results...) Acting on information received we ended up ordering a Severin via mail order, mainly due to indolence in industrial quantities at this end (big thanks for the link, Farang). Will report back if it is a disaster, so otherwise assume that all is well...
I fully appreciate that I should make my own bread manually and traditionally, but Ms. Spark gets upset because the result is 'all salty' since we don't have air conditioning and I therefore 'dribble' sweat into the dough. Eeeuch! The other downside of the 'manual' method is that if you want, no, if she wants freshly baked bread at eight in the morning, then I have to get out of bed at four in the morning. I'm sure that you understand.
Thanks again for all your help. Will report back when the beast arrives.

Here is a loaf I made earlier this afternoon, sliced and ready for the freezer and then ok to take out whenever needed. I must admit that I did cheat when kneeding the dough and used my Kenwood Chef for the first 8-10 minutes, but then did it by hand for the 2nd and 3rd rise (doing it a further 2 times makes the bread rise more and even lighter).
For anybody who enjoys baking, try downloading The Great British Bake Off series 2 episode 3 https://isohunt.com/torrent_details/334 ... ab=summary which is all about baking variations of bread - it will make you feel hungry as well as realising that there is a lot of amature talent out there

Re: Bread maker needed.
Yo! It was just like Christmas. The breadmaker arrived at Mr.VS's office desk today. Not bad considering it was only ordered on Friday and we assumed would be delayed by the weather.
It cost 4,000 baht and looks absolutely fine - it even has the instructions in English. It's actually much cheaper than some that we were considering buying a few years back.
We're off for a few days hols in Kanchanaburi on a floating raft (yes, absolutely crazy, but I think they've had less rain than we have here in NP), so the real test of its bread making abilities will start in a week or so.
Thanks for all your help and advice, it saved us a lot of time and frustration.
