Good news for new car buyers (especially Hondas)

Post by hhfarang »

I always wondered how much the import duty was on an auto here... 80%!

Your new Hondas will be imported from Japan until the plant here can get up and running again...

I seem to remember it (import duty) being even worse years ago - '95 and on. Over 100%, but maybe on engine size or value.....

China has huge duties, but now have major car manufacturers such as Ford, Mercedes, VW, BMW, Honda, Mazda with production plants all over - the plan obviously worked!!

I don't know if putting your name in for a Japan import would have an advantage anymore. The Thai built Honda seems pretty solid. News yesterday said their production was about 37,000 units behind firm orders, so assume the imports are going to be arriving for quite a while. Pete

It seems Toyota has also taken a beating from the floods. :( My wife was told yesterday that if she orders a new Vigo, she'll have to wait 6 months for delivery. The also said they don't even have one available for test drives. Good news for her, but bad news for me since she was going to get me one for Xmas.

Yeah, they've all had a problem with parts supply, even Ford, GM and Mitsu over here in dry Rayong and Chonburi. Pete

I have just arrived back from a rushed trip to the North. It must be just some models that are in short supply, as I saw at least 6 car carriers heading North yesterday. I could not see just what make they were, but mostly small sedans, and several empty carriers returning South. Even more trucks loaded with new motor cycles, but again I could not see what make they were.
