Not another Italian restaurant!

Post by bapak »

Just a query. Have an Italian vegetarian chef friend thinking about opening a small strictly vegetarian Italian restaurant. Is there a market?

There seems to be a lot of Italian restaurants in Hua Hin these days, I passed several last night and they were all pretty busy. Maybe they were always there and I just never noticed - Chang, Chang, Chang .........

If there are no other veggie restaurants around, your friend may well find a niche in the market.
The local expats might enlighten you as to what competition exists.

I guess the big question, as in all holiday resorts, is whether you can survive the low season.

Compare the percentage of vegetarian or near vegetarian dishes on menus to the rest of the menu. It's tiny. If the demand existed the percentage would be larger, unless those who seek there vitamins and fiber in veggie form have long since given up and eat at home.

Purely for reasons of health and personal tastes, I don't eat much meat myself but I do eat seafood which is abundant in Thailand. There might be a niche market for a vegetarian restaurant in Hua Hin but I wouldn't stick to just Italian food as that might be a bit too limiting and to be honest, Italian restaurants in general do have more vegetarian dishes on the menu than average.

There is an Italian Vegeterian Restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 22, Bangkok named Govinda.

They do pasta and pizza dishes using all vegetarian ingredients. You’d be hard pressed to tell the soy prawn, the bolognese and pepperoni from the real thing.

It seems Italian food is almost as popular as Thai food in Thailand, and I have noticed more and more Thai's eating Italian, which surprises me, given the amount of Cheese in most of the food??? Can anyone explain this??

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Pasta seems to go down well with the Thais. Especially spaghetti, 'carbon-are-or' seems to be a favourite.

It's probably popular because, well Italian food is pretty darn good. Same reason Chinese, Thai, Indian and... well pretty much every food other than our own (:D) is so popular in England.
