Bank Accounts
Name and shame time. Who (non-Thai) has had a problem opening an account here for retirement or other purposes. Which bank turned you down and the reasons they gave, and which bank finally accepted your business? Pete

No problems, have accounts at four banks, but they are joint accounts with the Thai missus.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Bank Accounts
That's a big difference. What about the foreigner who has tried it alone? Petehhfarang wrote:No problems, have accounts at four banks, but they are joint accounts with the Thai missus.

Re: Bank Accounts
So far so good. I don't know why then people I know are complaining they are having problems with a tourist visa, in prep for applying for a retirement extension. The two mentioned were BAY and K. Neither one is in a resort town but up in Issan, and perhaps some branches up there don't get the foreign traffic. Pete

You can also bank online with them. It is really easy. HSBC also do global transfers to BKK bank HSBC.

Re: Bank Accounts
Back in 2006 I tried to open an account in Bangkok Bank (Pathum Thani) but was refused. They told me that I needed a one year visa in order to do so - and I only had a 30 day tourist stamp in my passport.
Two weeks later I opened an account with Kasikorn in Market Village without problems.

Re: Bank Accounts
In 2007 I had big problems to open a bank account in Chiang Rai for my Non-O Visa (retirement). All banks wanted a work permit. Finally Bangkok Bank opened an account with the help of a Thai citizen of Chiang Rai, who had to give some guarantee statement for me.
Re: Bank Accounts
They did not want a work permit in the Kasikorn Bank, it was very easy.pitsch wrote: All banks wanted a work permit.

Re: Bank Accounts
I think you got it about right there. Around the time you're talking about there was a regulation that came in that required non-Thai nationals to have a work permit to open an account.pitsch wrote:In 2007 I had big problems to open a bank account in Chiang Rai for my Non-O Visa (retirement). The reasoning was that if you banked here you must be working.
Well, I think that other powers that be realised that that was a bit short-sighted and the regulation is pretty much forgotten about now.
If you have a problem at on bank then just walk down the road to another and you'll probably be gratefully received.
