Where to buy DVD's

Post by DAVYCHEZ »

Hi,
Can anybody please tell me where to buy English DVD's?
I went to Market Village today but could only see one stall on the first floor and
there wasn't that much choice.
Thanks :)

The Grand Market or Night Market, quality depends on how new the film is, most stalls have a DVD player and will show you the quality.

Does anyone buy DVDs off of the vendor that walks the bars as I am bringing a personnel player with me on this trip.
Also is it the blue or the green motif on the cover for the UK region?

I haven't personally, but have had friends who have. He will usually try to source anything he doesn't with him. Friends have never had any problem changing 'rare' bad copies.

Okay so can I post back my copy of Happy Feet Two? The soundtrack is something like Malay and the subtitles in very badly translated 'Thaienglish'! Good quality picture though....

My friends have been like the OP with their own portable DVD player. I don't think his returns policy would stretch to the UK

I think most of them have a universal code, which allows them to be played anywhere.

There is a couple if titles I will really be looking out for
1. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
2. War Horse.

I thought about having a night in Bangkok and doing some shopping in MBK but I just want to get to Hua Hin ASAP :D

Up north if you can find DVDs they are normally crap C rated films at double the price they should be.

Yea I'd imagine so. Actually it's not so much a universal code, as much as a total lack of code altogether but that's just being nit picky :p

It's also possible to make almost any DVD player region free with a 'hack' (its not so much a hack; its how the manufacturer themselves set the region in the first place). Google 'make my dvd player region free' and you'll get a whole host of results. This list is pretty comprehensive.

We started buying our DVDs from the girl with a small stand in the aisle on the second floor of Market Village (near the big camera shop) about six months ago. They are 80 baht each and we have never gotten a bad one from her. She keeps the latest ones in a big stack behind the counter so ask if they are not out and she will let you browse the stack.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Buying Thai mastered versions will almost always have English language options, and be a quality product rather than some of the questionable copies that can be had around town. Price is generally equal to or better than the street guys; quality usually better. Hua Hin top floor is one option, as is Paemai market, I think on a tuesday. Paemai lady is 100 baht or 6 for 500.
