Following my recent operation, I've been told that I am not allowed to fly. I am due to visit the hospital today, and hope that restriction is lifted.

Congrats Big Boy, you're almost there. Question for Mike and Big Boy, Do you speak Thai? My Thai is very mediocre and I keep telling myself to try harder to learn it before I move there permanently. Maybe even learn to read, but I can't ever manage to find the time or energy. I'm sure it'll be easier to learn when you live there, but then again, I expect I'll be quite lazy at that time.

My Thai is poor, and I currently try to avoid using it at the moment. However, I do understand enough to get by. My problem is speaking Thai with a Janner accent - it doesn't really work for me. The only persons I speak Thai to regularly are my grand daughters, and that has been because they have been too young to understand English - they both usually understand me ..................... eventually  .

My son on the other hand, who has a broad Bristolian accent, manages very well. He seems to change his voice to 'comic character' mode, and it works very well.

Traveller2, :)

thanks a lot for your good wishes. :thumb:

Our budget has shrunk somewhat due to my overspending (+ low exchange rate)! :banghead:

So we shall most probably rent a house for a year or two to save up for the purchase of a house and wait for a decent exchange rate.

As for my Thai - a few basic phrases, no more!
Actually I plan to learn some Japanese. The Thai will have to get used to that.Lol :naughty:

My wife watches Korean soaps dubbed in Thai.
So she knows a lot more.!

We'll manage somehow.

Take care!

Kind regards,

Mike

The exchange rate has been pretty steady for the last year or two.

Don't hold your breath. I doubt it's going to get much better than it is now. I wouldn't expect anything more than a 10% increase, and even then not for a few years.

Are you planning on spending any significant time in Japan? Do you have Japanese friends you want to converse with? Or are you doing it just for fun? All of these are equally valid reasons, but if you are doing it 'just for fun', learning Thai should be just as fun and will serve you a lot better if you plan on retiring to Thailand!

Hello,

Elementary, dear Watson!
Of course, if you plan to settle in Thailand, learning some Thai is advisable.

Only I could not bring myself to study Japanese after work.
But I'll have plenty of time after my retirement.

Take care!

Kind regards,

I'm still at a loss. What is the need to learn Japanese?

As for my Japanese aspirations - I love Japanese culture (& women! - Don't tell my wife!lol) and I have Japanese friends that I plan to visit.

The exchange rate has been pretty steady for the last year or two.
...and wait for a decent exchange rate.
Don't hold your breath. I doubt it's going to get much better than it is now. I wouldn't expect anything more than a 10% increase, and even then not for a few years.

Being a bloody Kraut I was referring to the Euro-Baht exchange rate!

Couldn't agree more!
