Thai Microwave(Big paperweight/Clock)

Post by TingTongJohn »

Things in Thailand that make you wonder. O.K we should start at the start makes sense right? My wife choose to buy her mom(Old fashion Thai lady) A microwave so she could heat her tea water and reheat her food when needed. First of all that horde that is called my wifes closest family never leaves much as in table/floor scrapes from what I have seen. Moving on. Well we got the Microwave. Has it been used? As far as i can tell the answer is no. It sits in the corner looking pretty(Thai ownership is about a year now)The biggest question her mom has was how to reset the time on this large clock as they unplug the microwave when going out due to the fear of a fire. Then must reset the time when returning and plugging it in....sigh

I had the same problem at first but finding the prospect of describing what could and couldn't go into a microwave too daunting, I bought one of those sets of plastic microwave containers from Index and told everyone that they are the only things to go in it and that seemed to do the trick.

I thought they had solved that problem of metal containers, utensils etc.? I've seen units with brushed stainless interiors. Mine here has a metal interior lining, but enamel coated. Do the instruction books still say "no metal"? Pete

I guess the only way is to give it a try Pete!

But apart from the problem of stopping metals going into the microwave I reckon TTJ's wife should have stuck with a simple 2 dial operation microwave. No clock - no confusion. (And to be honest the clock shouldn't need to be reset every time - the timer should still work normally. OK I know try explaining that...)

Instead what the family have got is an impressive status symbol they can't use, rather than a simple oven they maybe could use, but which wouldn't impress the neighbours. Sorry TTJ but thats how it works in the LOS!

Seems pretty obvious to me that if it remains unused then the best thing to do is leave it unplugged - then there is no issue about the clock and having to reset it!!!

Never mind trying to explain the workings of a microwave oven............try explaining how an 18 speed bicycle works........lol. I keep getting told by my Mother In Law that the chain is too lose, or that something is broken. If I put it in a higher gear for her, she finds it to hard, and then tells me the chain is too tight......lol.

The little 50cc Honda scooter we've got has also proved to be quite a challenge. It won't start at the moment, so, according to Father In Law, who actually is the only person that uses it, the battery is flat. Never mind that the electric starter motors is spin as it's always done, and never mind that I actually tested the battery with a meter and showed him the reading.................the battery is flat. Off he goes to buy a new battery, and,................well it still doesn't start. Now, I know exactly what the problem is, but since he knew better, and basically made it clear that I don't know what I'm talking about, he can fix the bloody thing himself, or take it in for repairs, and pay the bill himself. At least, that's how the situation will stand for a few more weeks.

Anyway, back to microwaves and any other hardships the OP might be enduring.....lol.

Ours says metal is ok and in fact it has a metal removable metal rack that divides the oven in half vertically in case you want to cook two large plates stacked. It has instruction right on the machine to never heat water or any liquid without sticking a metal spoon into it. Heated (to a boil) water in a microwave can explode in your face when you open the door and it only takes a few seconds with a metal spoon in because the spoon gets hot and helps heat the water.

However, I don't think you can use metal in a cheap microwave... ours is a Siemens and you can put nearly anything in it.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Is it just how it works here though? Are us farrang (as a collective, not individuals) really any better at choosing function over form?

Those microwaves where you have to mess around with digital controls are an annoying waste of time. All you ever do with the things is warm stuff up and both the microwaves that I've bought in Thailand just have the two knobs on the front that you wind around and you only really need one of them!
They are handy in Thailand once you can get people to use them properly as Thai living seems to involve having endless leftovers of food hanging around the house and proper use of fridge and microwave saves a lot of waste.

 Umm They the do use it as a clock is the reason I guess they like having it on :banghead: . I guess in the past there has been some issues with things being plugged in thus starting a fire. 2 known fires in past homes according to my wife. All in all they seem very proud of this large clock that coudl second as a cooking system... what can I say

We should be - I certainly am and hate microwaves with fiddly digital controls as an example - but 'form' in the western sense equates with style, in the sense that things should look trendy and colour co-ordinated. In the LOS colour co-ordination is the furthest thing from their minds. Big and flash is what matters!

Oh F.F.S.!..how many times do I have to tell the family to cover the food being warmed..!! The inside of this Zapper looks disgusting! Only 1 setting used..FULL, 5 mins minimum.. (food left to cremate if Ch 7 Thai soap being viewed at same time). We have an A4 sheet on the wall next to the Zapper listing do's & don'ts..yep, waste of good ink.. T.I.T. 5-5!
