We do our 'duty' trip every couple of years (although I've been back twice last year :( ), but always book with an airline to have a week somewhere else on the way back. It's lovely seeing the family and catching up with friends, but it's not really a 'holiday', so we like to spend some quality time with each other in another country. This year we're flying Uzbekistan Air  , so we'll have a week there on the way back. It doesn't cost much more than flying direct and gives us a chance to explore one of the countries we fly over.

Previously we've stopped off in India (not so good), Sri Lanka (lovely), and Turkey (fantastic).

We spend 10 days with each lot, which is long enough to catch up, and not too long to get bored (or be boring). It's worked well for the last 14 years.
