Is she cooking, pickling, distilling or what?

Post by easyas »

What on earth is she (TGF) doing?
She spots some obscure vegetable in Makro (looks like a cross between a lettuce and a cabbage), whoops with delight and buys half a sackful (100 baht only though). As soon as she gets home, sack on back terrace, vegies emptied onto sack, closes door and apparently forgets about them. I should point out it was a stinking hot day and the back terrace faces west - hot, hot, hot!
Next morning, opens door, tut tuts 'cos trusty hound dog had rummaged around in vegies overnight. Not to worry, collects all the scattered vegies up and removes sack and vegies to the top of a hedge out of the way of said hound. Another day passes.
More activity the next day - there she is sitting on kitchen floor chopping vegies up. Very bad smell, so there she next is sitting outside the house chopping veggies up.
Trip to market - comes back with quantities of what looks like some sort of evil looking black fungus. Boils them up in large pot for very long period. Whether veggies were also boiled I don't know - I don't think so though.
Next boiled fungus and veggies are married in a large plastic bag, which is then put in another large pot and put outside on the eastern side of the house - feng shui?
Now all this time I've been trying to get the lovely TGF to explain what on earth she was doing, but her English wasn't up to the task and my Thai is utterly deficient. All she did tell me was the pot needed another week out in the sun before its contents could be considered finished.
Now my question is does anyone know what she is concocting - exotic delicacy, herbal potion, hooch, aphrodisiac, or what?
:? No

If you had said she buried it in the ground, I would have said Thai kimchi. It could indeed be something like that though. Pete

I think it's a magic potion. My cashier dried those leaves on a rack affair outside the bar several years ago. They were left out in the sun for several days. I didn't see the potion mixed with anything else but who knows what went on in the kitchen? She told me that it made a 'medicine for stomach'.

Have her type the name into Google in Thai and then have Google translate it to English and see what you come up with and let us know.

Already tried that - answer "drug".
Anybody any wiser?
Could still be exotic delicacy, herbal potion, hooch or aphrodisiac!

All I can say is that my wife now buys about 10 kilos of very ripe bananas, mashes them up by hand, puts them into a large plastic container and adds a lot of water and sugar. Sort of seals it all with a top and leaves alone for 3 months.
This is the elixir of life. I just tell her it's alcohol. I've tried some, just a shot glass, and it's strong.
There's nothing better than seeing my wife actually wake up at around 10am and have a snifter.
Geeze, she thinks I am drunk after 10 bottles of Chang? Actually, I am.
She just thinks the hooch is good for her.
Mind you, she lasts for about 5 minutes and then has to hibernate again.
Ar the end of the day, anything that produces some psychotropic/hyptnotic/ drunken effect will probably be described as "different, but good for you" in this country.

Very, very good! I don't normally like bananas overly much, but I reckon I could make an exception in this case!

My Mrs is ALWAYS boiling herbaceous crap, or buying it in..she's big on these 'tonics' that her mother (& grandmothers) recommended for years. Lomu..when I'm in Nong Ki there's a stall that does banana-fritters..but uses over-ripe bananas..mmm..the taste is well let's say 'mature'..but damn good!

I am curious to know what your girlfriend ended up making. Its been sometime since she concocted this brew. Did you ever find out what it was?

Sounds very like a concoction devised and propagated on the Super Cheng channel.

It turned out to be edible - a uniquely smelling (to put it kindly) cross between chutney and chili - very spicy and sour at the same time. It was very popular with her Thai friends. I tried just the tiniest of tastes - quite liked it - but didn't go back for more!
Still don't have a name for it.

Ours certainly vanished  Still I know the interloper has a good stash of fine wine which will be raided at some point!
