The French know about mistresses, second wives and girlfriends.
Their rule is: Half your age plus seven.
If you are 60 then look in the 37-yr old range.
Others would say don't buy, rent. Cheaper in the long run.

Agree with the last line. Even though I'm older than 60 a 37-yr mistress is too old for me. Prefer the firmness of the flesh.

Plenty of firm 37 yr olds in Siam, unlike the west where its all over (50lbs over) by age 27.

Another point to keep in mind is that if you're anything like me, you'll reach a point in your forties when you find that anyone too much younger than you is incredibly annoying in any capacity, not just as a partner.

It ain't the lasses GLC - I think you already sussed that out. It's their families.
An interesting situation all the same - knowing where you work, and that you probably have more scope than just the BG scene, you would imagine the Thai families having a bit more liberal attitude than a mom and pop up in Isaan. After all young Thai women marry young Thai men all the time with no problem.
So I reckon there are two issues here. First you haven't got a mega rich Pop so can't get on the first rung of his multi million business, and second you maybe aren't viewed as a long term proposition because of your age. (You could be just sowing your oats and go back home rather than settle there.)
But all is not lost as Buksi would tell you. There are Thai girls who don't see things that way. Just keep on looking and enjoy yourself - don't get hung up about it.

Why do you care what others think? When large age differences are common here, I don't see this. Especially when you are still pretty young.

You are looked down on, full stop, if you are with a dark-skinned girl. She's automatically a prostitute in their eyes. I never notice other's looks and it only enters my awareness if there is a dinner or event where 'middle class' Thais may be present. This is easily solvable. The g/f won't attend. Nor will I.

When a guy is 19 he needs a 35+ yr old woman to show him he's been born.

There was a time in British society when it was thought that the bride should ideally be Half the man's age + 7
Seems to work 30y man === 22y bride. 50y man == 32y bride

That equation works for me, the older I get the younger they do! Shit - I wouldn't mind a 25 year old right now ...

Saying that, this is also very true (even before you get to your forties)! Looking good is one thing, but spending your days playing with a phone and lacking the conversational skills and knowledge to entertain a monkey would certainly annoy me!

:agree: Couldn't agree more

At 19, as part of my apprenticeship I had to spend 4 weeks on a construction site during the summer break from college.

My landlady (Where I was staying in a rented room), was a lonely 35 yr old 'trucker's widow', whose husband was away on long European road hauls.

After 3 1/2 weeks of 'hard work' on site, I phoned my training manager and asked for an additional two weeks there - because I found it 'very educational'

My wish was granted and it was a wonderful summer 8)

I envy you, Terry!
I taught a 17 yr old Brazilian kid who told me that when he turned 15 his grandpa took him to a bordello and paid three girls to take him upstairs and "show him he's been born" (that's where I got the phrase). He said the girls took great delight in relieving him of his virginity.

There is a flaw in the half your age + 7 formula.
If you are 42 you should have a 28 year old partner, but at age 44 you should have a 29 year old. Ergo this cannot be the same person. So in theory a commendable calculation but as it implies you have to change partner all the time - although the idea might be tempting - it will be highly impractical to apply.

Back to the poll. The answers will also vary depending on who you ask. On this forum the poll will be answered by many older farang retirees with younger Thai partners who of course all say: "it doesn't matter as long as you are happy". But tourists and people in the west especially females will have a different opinion on a big age difference and also the middle and high class Thais who can make a decent living without the need of farang involvement in the family.
Mr. Plum is clear:
MrPlum wrote:You are looked down on, full stop, if you are with a dark-skinned girl. She's automatically a prostitute in their eyes.
Unfortunately true. Useless to try to defend your relationship with "I met her at the university", "we have been married for 15 years" or "we have seven children". Completely irrelevant to the Thais who are convinced that she is not in a real relationship but is doing a job, she takes care of a farang full time.
Mr. Plum's says:
MrPlum wrote:Why do you care what others think?
Although many people say (and wish) they do not care what others think it is not so straightforward. It is human nature to care what others think and to conform to social norms and Mr. Plum does so himself:
MrPlum wrote:I never notice other's looks and it only enters my awareness if there is a dinner or event where 'middle class' Thais may be present. This is easily solvable. The g/f won't attend. Nor will I.
Of course if you do not care what others think you would attend.

Good luck. Do as the Thais do "not think too much", enjoy the moments.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.
