Syd Barrett, the former lead singer of Pink Floyd and one of the key figures of the 1960s, died last Friday from cancer at the Cambridgeshire home to which he retreated as a recluse more than 30 years ago.
Barrett, who suffered from a psychedelic-drug induced breakdown while at the peak of his career, was 60. His brother Alan confirmed his death for the Gardian, saying only: "He died peacefully at home. There will be a private family funeral in the next few days."
Joe Boyd, who discovered Pink Floyd, reminisces about Barrett and the band in this Guardian commentary.
UPDATE ON CAUSE OF DEATH: The Guardian reports that the cause of death was cancer. Other media reports say the cause of death was related to his diabetes or caused by complications from diabetes. Still others say no cause of death was officially given.

...you crazy diamond"
"See Emily Play" is one of those songs that will always remain. Whenever I hear it, which is way to seldom for some reason, I see myself, 15 years old, on my first visit to England, spending perhaps to much time smoking under a pier in Bournemouth accompanied by a lot of new friends and that song. That was a good summer.
