Trip to Bangkok for Medications

Post by Big Boy »

We were booked on the 06:05 train to Bangkok, and we had a Tuk Tuk ordered for 05:30. 05:40 came, and no Tuk Tuk. Mrs BB phoned, and he had forgotten us. 10 minutes later he turned up in his underwear - no time to get dressed in case we missed our train :D .

Sat at the station at 06:00, and some station official approaches and asks to see our tickets. Mrs BB is directed to the ticket office, and new tickets are issued - this time for the 04:09 (all trains to Bangkok were running late). This meant that the 2 of were travelling for less than 400 Baht - we received a 200 Baht refund for this earlier train :D . I had a look at the statistics board at Bangkok, and our original train, due to arrive in Bangkok at 10:05 didn't actually arrive until 13:25  .

It took 5 hours to get to Bangkok, and I think we visited every little backwater en-route.

Leaving Hua Hin, I was disgusted at how filthy Hua Hin's railside is (obviously no 'elite' visitors recently). Until Bangkok, it was by far the dirtiest town/village we visited.

Off the train, and straight on to the Metro to Sukumvit. Very impressed - London Underground has a lot to learn from this - it was very smooth and spotless.

Found South East Pharmacy very easily, and was very impressed at the way they could convert our current medication into Thai equivalents - 6 months medication for Mrs BB and I was less than 8000 Baht - a lot less than I had anticipated, so this really was a result!!

We had a little lunch, and then reversed the journey (I wasn't hanging about because I absolutely hate Bangkok).

We had to wait over an hour at Bangkok - we got on the train almost right away, and noticed as we walked down the platform that there was a fair bit of maintenance being carried out on some carriages. Our train was due to leave at 15:10. At 14:20 there was an almighty thud. I said to Mrs BB don't worry, they're just connecting the engine at the other end of the train. This then happened about 6 more times in fairly quick succession - it was so severe, it was hard to stay in our seats. Then the train left the station!! It turned out that they were doing some sort of road test on their repairs. Emergency stop after emergency stop. Travel forwards, travel backwards - each stop and start was with another almighty thud. Eventually we pulled back into the station, loaded up with passengers, and were away dead on time. However, the driver did take the opportunity to make about another 5 emergency stops before we were out of Bangkok. I call them emergency stops, although I don't know what they really were - very dangerous though.

Most of the 4 hour journey home was quite uneventful - they had a buffet car on board, but don't sell coffee in the afternoon - I was hanging by the time I got home (beer is out of the question for me at the moment).

There were a lot of police on board, and they kept coming around asking where we were travelling to - as the train was destined for the deep South, I assumed they were looking for terrorists, although Mrs BB said they were looking for drugs. 3 and a half hours into our journey, 3 police marched into our carriage, walked straight up to and arrested somebody. Mrs BB confirmed it was for drugs, and then asked me if the drugs we had just bought were OK? Whoops  - I hadn't even considered that, but every one was a prescription only item in the UK. Fortunately, we weren't searched - just shows how easy it is to get caught. I don't know how we would have stood in that situation.

We arrived home at about 20:00 - a long boring day, with a few interesting highlights.

To be fair London Underground is more than 100 years older, (1st section 1863), has 270 stations to 18 and 400km of track compared to 16km

And passenger traffic considerably higher. Same same British rail (as it was). Used to work for them and their computer systems were second to none. Tried selling them to countries all over the globe. Waste of time. BR traffic loading is far heavier than any country in the world so hence ;who needs a complex system'.

BB, I use the railway, as many do, when I expect to be late leaving and late arriving. Police patrol the trains all the time and it has it's good points believe me.

And to travel the same amount of stations it costs 18 times as much :?

I've no problem with police patrolling the trains, but please, not when I'm carrying a bag full of drugs. Yes, they were for known, recorded medical conditions, but I'm sure they'd have tried to extract a fair lump of tea money if they had happened across them.

Aaah BB - you are discovering the many delights of rail travel in the LOS!
It's cheap - cheerful - fraught - friendly. Never boring (apart from the often lengthy waits) and that metro link at HuaLamphong is a gem IMO.
Please please try a sleeper trip sometime and let us have your thoughts. I can thoroughly recommend the overnight NongKhai to Bangkok train on Christmas Eve

Yes Ken, you are correct. However, this first trip was important to me that I got the correct medication. Not one tablet had the same name as used in the UK. I needed to see that I was getting like for like.

Hello Again Mr BB

My wife has read your daytrip story ( to the SE Pharmacy) most of her family are in the
North East of Thailand and are not aware of this Pharmacy.

My wife is curious and would like to know how many diffrent medications did you and your
wife acquire for your 8000 baht ?

thank you Ken

Good Afternoon Mr BB

Crikey that is very good value for money, I will tell her that. She has tried to phone the SE Pharmacy
earlier (a few times) but they have not yet answered the phone, I guess they are probably very busy in the shop.

I wonder if you know if they ( SE Pharmacy) have a dedicated mail order phone number ? or if they Accept paypal as payment ? ( I try to avoid where possible giving my credit card number )

thank you Ken

Ken, the only phone number I have is 02252 8241 or 02250 0651. The fax number is 02250 0713.

The procedure we have been told to follow when ordering is to send a fax stating what we want. They will respond with an invoice and bank transfer details. We will have to put the money into their bank account, and they will ship the goods.

Good Aftternoon

Contact has been made with the South East Pharmacy, it appears that the standard
postage charge for small orders is 300 bht, this covers their courier cost to the local
post office and delivery to anywhere in Thailand.

I am told one weeks ( generic) supply of medication for "Shingles" is 450 bht.

I hope this information is usefull
