Getting deposit from overseas to Thai Bank

Post by brianks »

Haven't seen this one before so thought I would share. I discovered that you can write a personal check (in foreign currency--mine U.S.) and deposit it to Bangkok Bank account (fee $10 U.S.) and in approximately 30 days the amount in Thai Baht will be deposited in your account.

Oh it was not easy to keep asking questions at Bangkok Bank to see if it can be done because they kept throwing up every roadblock imaginable in an effort to get rid of me. Since Bangkok Bank has a branch in NY and my options for getting a large amount of money from the U.S. in a timely manner were nil since I was not in the U.S. nor going any time soon, I just kept asking. Had to insist several times that the bank person call someone in HQ to find out if it was possible because I knew they would not have dealt with this situation before.. Took over an half hour to deal with them but after I would not give up and the call was made to HQ they "discovered" that it was possible for me to write a check from my U.S. bank, pay a $10 fee (320 baht then) and in approximately 30 days, the money would appear in my account. Sure enough, approximately 30 days after we did the transaction the money appeared in my Bangkok Bank account and the exchange rate was outstanding.

Don't know about UK funds possibilities but since Bangkok Bank does have a branch in NY it is another way to get funds from checking account in U.S. to a Bangkok Bank account rather than the multiple transactions over months that it would take via AEON and without all the transaction fees in addition to a good exchange rate.

The transaction with Bangkok Bank in NY transferring to your account in Thailand can be performed entirely online within a week's time.
just setup your American bank and Bangkok Bank NY as authorizing each other to make the the transfer and click away.
it has work numerous times for me in large or small amounts.

I had previously set up Bank to Bank Transfer with Wells Fargo and Bangkok Bank. When I went to do a transfer online the notice appeared that I could only do 2,000 per day and 6,000 max per month. I am sure with other banks this can be set up but Wells Fargo had it's restrictions which thwarted my efforts. I did not call them to see what could be done to get around this and maybe should have. I am definitely looking into opening an account with another bank in the U.S. that will enable these types of transfers in the future.

Hi Brianks,
I use Wells Fargo. I have set up International Wire Transfers for use over the phone. I was able to set my own limit. I simply call them during business hours, give them my account # and pin, give them the receiving banks info, amount, and it's done. Definitely give them a call. You may be using a different service that has a limit. Let us know what you find out please. Good Luck!

I also have a Wells Fargo account. It is set up for "repetitive" transfers, and I do it over the phone. BUT, I think that you will find now that 1. you have to personally front up at the bank to set it up, and 2. it will have to be the same nominated account each time you do it.

Hi Nereus, I set up a different account each time. No problem. I start on the automated system and then transfer to an operator to give the receiver details...SWIFT, Acct no. address, receiver name, etc. I had mine set up with Wachovia before. When it transferred to WF I just had to call a different number. SO far I have set up 4 different accounts with no problem. WIll set up one more tonight. Hope that helps Brianks. Let us know.

WOW, thanks for all the information. Over a month ago I was at a loss as to how to get the chunk over here and surely should have called Wells Fargo to see what could be done. Will do so now and try to set it up so it won't be a problem in the future. Probably even better to store up the money in chunks (several months worth) and transfer it here at one time. Save the numerous AEON visits and WF fees in addition to getting a much better exchange rate.

THANKS!!!

Hi Brianks, I just made another wire transfer through Wells Fargo. Again with a new account. They said there is a $45 fee from their side and a smaller fee on this end from the receiving bank. Usually about 200-500 Baht. If you go through Bangkok Bank of New York, it is a $30 domestic transfer fee. If you go to Bangkok Bank's website you will see the routing number for using this. Then you just use the account number for Thailand account at Bangkok Bank. Of course this is only for Bangkok Bank. Definitely will save by doing larger amounts. And it is pretty quick 1-3 days so far. The only thing else is I usually call the Wells Fargo number from my "majic Jack." This is a free internet call to the US and shows up as a local number in the US. I bought this from Radio Shack (and was given a local number at that time) in the US and it works anywhere in the world that you have internet. I don't know if this "local number" has given me any exceptions for doing transfers, but I don't think so. Good Luck!
