No I didn't. I said we all (generally) take advantage of the corruption system here such as paying a roadside fine for drink driving, for instance. I'm not advocating drink driving.

What would you choose should you/your wife be unfortunate enough to have a serious accident where you were speeding or doing a u-turn where you shouldn't, pay a relatively (to us) small compensation payment to the family... or say you want to go to court to get sentenced to jailtime? Or a grown up son/daughter visits here and smokes something they shouldn't on a drunken night out, pay 50k so they can go to the airport or 'x' years in jail, lose their job, family, home potentially?

We all buy our Lacoste polo shirts in Grand Market for 150Baht instead of going to the Market Village outlet and paying 4,500 Baht, just as we buy our pirated DVD's down there instead of the 500Baht originals. From land/property purchases to going for a drink in the bars (no minimum wage for staff) to getting a cheap meal down the night market where the 10 year old daughter is collecting & washing the plates... it's all us taking advantage of corruption here when it suits us to save a few bob.

But then as soon as it goes against us in the shape of a 200 Baht fine, all you hear is...

I just use my legs, or a motorcycle taxi and especially a songthaew.
Admittedly, I'm close to the main road so these forms of public transport are readily available, affordable and reliable.
I'm in no rush to go anywhere so I'm just one less vehicle on these roads.
The road blocks? Tea money, maybe, but the issue is getting all the incapable drivers/riders off the roads. I'm sick and tired of seeing the carnage on these streets - and some friends who I've lost.

And yes, I can't change it or the useless mindset of it all.
I'll just walk and try and not get run over by some idiot who should never at that time be behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.
Run someone over, kill them unintentionally - it's manslaughter. Simple as that.
A fine? Give me a break.

Well you're not helping the issue with...
I just use ...[snip] a motorcycle taxi and especially a songthaew.
!!

Seriously, the only reason I'll take my bike after having a couple more than advised is that I'd rather trust myself after 3 or 4 beers than risk a taxi who may well have polished off a bottle of Sangsom whilst on shift.

Any more than 4 and I'll usually chance the taxi driver though!

Fair enough, however if in doubt, I walk.
Or stumble.
EDIT - that was to pleng. Nothing bad, I'll just walk.

Not so easy if you want something with Thai subtitles though.

Yep... you are right there. Due to being single for the past year I had forgotten about that. :D

I got caught out myself with that one. My girlfriend likes subtitles, but she liked them in English, so they're generally easier to find online. My friend was talking about a DVD store that did special offers and I responded much in the same way as you did. And he responded much in the same way as I did.

What a dull story!
