Thai Trains - Pricing System

Post by Big Boy »

We decided to have a day trip to Prachuap by train yesterday. I checked the times of trains, and decided that we would travel down on the 11:30 (ish) train, and return on the 1500 (ish) train. That would give 2.5 hours for a walkabout and a bite to eat.

We got to Hua Hin station, and Mrs BB goes to the ticket desk, and requests 2 2nd class tickets to Prachuap. They said no 2nd, only 3rd class available. I said OK, and the deal was done. 19 Baht for me, and my wife travelled free :? I had a lot of fun explaining to my wife that she free because she was so old - does anybody know the real reason for her free travel? Brilliant I thought, until I read the tickets. We weren't booked on the 11:30 train, we were booked on the 12:00 train, which had a journey time of 2 hours, and was already running over an hour late.

I went to study the departures screen, and sure enough the 11:30 train was displayed - of course, it was running the mandatory 30 minutes late, but the journey time was 1 hour less. I sent Mrs BB back to the ticket office, and told her to book us onto the correct train. She talks to the clerk, and calls me over. Its 323 Baht each. Of course, I asked why, but there was no sensible reply. I thought about it - 323 Baht equates to about £6.50 each, so I thought, don't be a cheap Charlie, just hand the money over, which I did. Any other decision would have seen us having to abort our day out.

When we boarded the train, it was comfortable, air conditioned and all inclusive food and drinks (water) were served before we passed Khao Takiap.

The trip home was the same cost etc. How do they justify such a hike in costs? The more expensive trains were fully loaded both ways, so must be very popular. My theory is that you pay for the train's entire journey, regardless of where you board and alight.

As a bye the bye, when we boarded the train home, they turfed 2 people out of our seats - one was a pregnant woman (about 8 months). I was considering giving the seat back to her, but it soon became clear that she was travelling on a freebie as a friend of the hostess. I'd paid, and she hadn't, and none of the Thais on board (many a lot fitter than me) offered to give up their seat for her. This is still playing on my conscience a little, but I wonder what the reaction would have been (especially form my wife) if I had stood up again.

As far as I'm aware express trains are more expensive. Also, I'm not sure, but I think the later trains are more expensive. I remember going to Cha-Am and paying just 6bt, then having to pay around 70 for the last train back.

Thais travelling free is apparently an apology for the bad service on the Southern line. At least it was when we travelled from NKP a couple of years back. I guess this doesn't apply to express trains, though.

As we understand it 3rd class travel is free for all Thais. Last year we took a group of 40 of the hotel's staff by train for our annual English Camp in Kanchanaburi. Return travel was free from Hua Hin - Nakhon Pathom and Nakhon Pathom for all but two of the group.

Looking at your times and seeing has you had snacks/drinks served, I'm guessing that you were on the Sprinter service that runs to Surat Thani and is mostly for 'Farangs' on the way to Samui. Think there's only one class on that train and it's not 3rd. To 'impress', this train gets priority, so usually runs pretty much on time... compared to other trains - and gets you to Chumporn in 3 hours, quicker than I can drive it. Hostesses on board to assist with luggage too, IIRC.

Yes, that is the service we were travelling on, and there were a lot of Farangs on the outbound leg. When we changed our tickets, we were able to buy 2nd class.

Your comment regarding running on time and Thai trains does not go together well. Both ways the service was the mandatory 30 minutes late (as opposed to 60 minutes late for other services). However, TIT, so we were expecting that minor inconvenience - it's all part of the adventure of travelling in Thailand :D

It would probably be more of an inconvenience if they actually ran on time
