No more beer on the bus

Post by poosmate »

A new law banning drinking in public and personal vehicles has been published in the Royal Gazette, becoming effective from August 8 onwards.

Director of the Alcohol Control Committee Office Samarn Futrakul said the law was issued under the 2008 Alcoholic Beverage Control Act and it applies to both drivers and passengers of all vehicles.

Any persons found violating the law will face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both. source

That was about time. How will they enforce it?

Bummer, i do a lot of road miles around Thailand and i always have my mini four can ice box by my side its like a traveling companion. :D
I really enjoy a couple of beers and taking in the view as most people will be half asleep in a few km's including the driver.

Kendo.

Yes, it's a bit hard on passengers but I can understand why they're doing it as when I'm up in the village up in Issan I regularly see family members drive up from their jobs in Bangkok on a friday evening and they're shoveling empty Chang cans out of their trucks when they arrive. I saw one brother open the drivers door once and his feet were in a sea of cans and he's a Police officer with the whole of his family in the back.

Doesn't sound odd at all - I can never understand why people can't go without a beer for a few hours?

You chaps have obviously never been on a rugby or cricket tour.
Or a day trip across the Channel to France.

Happy memories, but also happy that they are memories!

That's slightly different DM, and reminds me more like the episode from Only Fools and Horses on their jolly to Margate - a private coach where you can all get a bit lashed together, which is a bit different than the post,I which I took to being on a public bus from say HH to BKK. And yes in my younger days, I too did a coach and cross Channel Ferry trip on a football tour to Belgium and Holland............and yes we took beers with us!!

It's again the tourists who will be hit the hardest. There are many who enjoy a beer or two while taken from one sight to another and as they are on vacation, they should be allowed to do it. Another reason for some to choose another destination.

I wouldn't take any on a bus journey but do have a couple in the taxi after 20 hours of travelling.
