The Cheese Thread

Post by PeteC »

Do we need a cheese thread? Maybe, as much talk about it now and again. This morning Takiap is comparing processed vs real.

To start things I've found the best cheddar I've had here at Central in Pattaya. Named " Essential Waitrose, English medium sliced cheddar". There's a big number 3 on it and the word "strength" below it so I assume they grade their strength by number. Great stuff, and very addicting.

Let's hear some tips about what and where anyone has found good cheeses. Pete

Pete, I'm not really a cheese lover as such, so I can't contribute much to this thread. I am a cheddar cheese addict though, so I find the processed cheese they use on burgers and etc to be very tasteless. I usually refer to it as being plastic rubbish.

For those who live here in Hua-Hin and who like Italian type cheese, try the cheese factory in Borfai. Unfortunately they don't make cheddar cheese :( , but I've been told their prices are a lot better that Villa Market and etc. All the cheese they sell is made on the premises, apart from some very tasteless cheddar which they sell on behalf of a place in Chaing Mai.

I also used to enjoy a type of cheese in South Africa which we called "green cheese" or "stink cheese" but have never seen it anywhere on my travels. It used to come in a sort of cone shape, and had to be grated since it was very hard and brittle. Really good on warm toast with lots of butter. If anyone knows what it's called, and where it can be found, I'd love to know.

The restaurant "All in Hua Hin" has a bigger cheese selection and they can also slice up some for you to use at home.
Also in Makro you can find a reasonable selection.

Villa market also has a lot to offer but the price range is a bit higher.

Yes the number relates to the strength of the cheese with most using a 1-6 grading with 6 being the strongest, so 3 is just medium. My preference is for a vintage cheddar or Canadian, both of which wouldbe a 5 or 6, but sadly very difficult to find here, so I always manage to smuggle a few packs back with me in a cool bag whenever I visit the UK.

My wife wanted to make some lasagne a couple of weeks ago, and we got some decent cheddar at Hua Hin Ham and Bacon. A massive lump, which meant that we could savour a few lunchtime cheese sandwiches as well. :munch:

My Granddaughter had her 7th birthday a couple of weeks ago. I bought a cake for her, but somebody else either made, or bought, another one. She bought a slice of it to me and although it was ok and had decoration on it the bloody sides had been plastered with revolting slices of plastic cheese. :?

Can you get Blue Stilton in Hua Hin? I was brought up just outside the Vale of Belvoir where it is traditionally from and to me it is a very fine cheese. If you're having to pay a lot of money for cheese overseas the advantage of the stronger ones is you don't need so much of it to enjoy!
I got hold of some Bavarian Blue here in Europe recently which is milder but still pretty good.

I've seen it in Makro and would imagine its available at Villa Market, but the Stilton in Makro looked very ripe indeed - i.e. it looked very old, rather than just having a good blue vein!!

Thanks, I'll have a look next time I'm in town, as long as it's not too far gone I can stand it pretty ripe!

Stilton, Red Cheddar, Scotch cheddar, Lancashire and the best of all Cheshire, crumbly and white - The best cheeses in the world come from the UK, forget the pretentious European fare. For the life of me I cannot understand why the Thais have not taken to cheese

Probably, simply because they have never been exposed to it - my (Thai) wife loves cheddar and the stronger the better, but until a few years ago had never tasted cheese.

May I suggest you try the Millenium Hilton in Bangkok, (stay with me), We took a Family member (a massive cheese fan) who was on holiday here to the buffet restaurant in the hotel because it has a cheese room she was in cheese heaven and raved about the selection. Expensive but I think she got my monies worth.

That's so odd! Waitrose is a good quality supermarket mainly serving the south of England. 'Essentials' is there everyday range of goods and they probably have the best selection of cheese of any supermarket. I use exactly the same cheese you refer to for the cheese and ham croissants I like for brekky from time to time and I also top burgers with them!

I'm looking at the package as we speak. Has the flag of St. George on the bottom front and all the nutrition data on the back, along with the Thai language import sticker. It as a use by date of August 7 and we bought it about 3 weeks ago, so it appears it arrives here with about 2 weeks freshness, although it's now August 15 and it's still tasty to me. Pete
